The tie at the top has been broken.
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) has pushed to the top of the Media Compilation Top 25 — gaining a one-point lead on No. 2 Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ), 236-235. The Gaels moved up from No. 4 to No. 3 in the HSFB100 as the lone movement between the two teams in the six nationally recognized polls.
The first of several tests to the Bishop Gorman strength of schedule advantage will come this week as Don Bosco is set to play Paramus Catholic (NJ) on Saturday. Paramus Catholic is currently ranked No. 18 in the Media Compilation Top 25 with placement in four of the six polls.
The six major polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.
For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.
The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each Tuesday of the season.
Aside from the slight adjustment at the top there were few developments of note however, there were two major outliers in the polling this week:
The Freeman Computer model went all-in on California as it ranked nine teams from that state in its Top 25.
Scout.com kept two teams from its previous Top 10 inside the rankings after suffering a loss. Its former No. 7 Archbishop Wood (Warminster, PA) fell to No. 18 following a narrow 35-31 loss to La Salle (Wyndmoor, PA) while former No. 8 Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) dropped to No. 19 after being soundly defeated 34-9 by La Salle (Cincinnati, OH).

RK (L) | POINTS | TEAM | HSFB100 | USAT | Max | PN | Scout | CPU
1 (1t) | 236 | Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1
The Gaels dominated its first Nevada opponent of the year, 56-0. It figures to be a simialr statement as the regular season and playoffs round out the slate of games for the private school powerhouse. It moved up a spot in the HSFB100 as Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) fell from No. 2 in the state to No. 3 and down the HSFB100.
2 (1t) | 235 | Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) | 1 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 3
Don Bosco was idle this week and did not see any movement in the polls. It could move back to the top spot next week if it shows well versus Paramus Catholic and the USAToday and the Freeman Computer have the Ironmen at No. 3.
3 (3) | 225 | De La Salle (Concord, CA) | 2 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 2
De La Salle was also unchanged in its placement within any poll as it was a 70-14 victor in Northern California. The Spartans are likely to see similar treatment as the season progresses until the Open Bowl Game.
4 (4) | 217 | Allen (Texas) | 4 | 2 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 12
Allen held its course in the human polls but was penalized in the Computer with a five spot slide, moving the Eagles out of the Top 10 in the algorithm. It played a strong game versus Lewisville but it was an expected result. A game with Plano West will be a test prior to the playoffs.
5 (5) | 212 | Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) | 8 | 4 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 9
The Tornadoes were idle this week and like Don Bosco the team did not move a single spot in any poll. The team is as complete buoy in the rankings as it will not gain unless others in front of it lose — if it isn’t jump by others playing a better schedule.
6 (6) | 198 | St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) | 9 | 8 | 10 | 7 | 6 | 8
The Braves gained five spots in the HSFB100 and two in the USAToday, but slipped in the Computer those two positions. The Braves open Trinity League play this week and the results moving forward will certainly impact the rankings as a whole. The first contest is against Mater Dei which is just behind St. John Bosco in the Media Compilation Top 25.
7 (7) | 184 | Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) | 10 | 12 | 6 | 15 | 14 | 5
Mater Dei slid backwards in its cumulative points after escaping against Westlake (Westlake Village, CA), 28-27. It dropped seven spots in the HSFB100 and four in the USAToday rankings. Those area all points that can be gained back if it defeats St. John Bosco this week.
8 (10) | 182 | DeSoto (Texas) | 5 | 17 | 7 | 13 | 12 | 10
The Eagles slid up in each poll at least one spot and it gained 10 total points which boosted it above Folsom (CA) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL). The Eagles could take over the top spot in Texas if Allen continues it slide and it shows well against No. 20 Cedar Hill in two weeks.
8 (9) | 177 | Folsom (California) | 12 | 22 | 8 | 14 | 9 | 4
Folsom followed up an impressive victory against Granite Bay by soundly bettering Del Oro on the road. The win was enough to have the Bulldogs jump over St. Thomas Aquinas in the Media Compilation Poll as it slid up in four of the six polls.
10 (8) | 176 | St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) | 14 | 11 | 14 | 9 | 8 | 14
St. Thomas Aquinas has the exact same points as last week but slipped from No. 8 to No. 10 as its dismantling of South Broward was received with a collective ho-hum.
11 (11) | 165 | Buford (Georgia) | 16 | 14 | 13 | 11 | 9 | 20
Buford — like many others — maintained its spot in the Media Compilation this week after beating a region foe that did not put up much of a fight. The Computer dropped the Wolves seven places as it has historically been hard on Georgia as well as lower classification programs.
12 (13) | 148 | Miami Central (Miami, FL) | 11 | 7 | 11 | 12 | 16 | –
Miami Central still has a few namebrand games on the schedule so it isn’t quite a buoy at this point. It gained three points in slide up moves inside the HSFB100 and the Scout poll.
13 (12) | 148 | Bellevue (Washington) | 18 | 9 | 9 | 6 | 20 | –
Bellevue may have hit its ceiling for the year as the buoy will be pushed back as the year goes on. Its strength of schedule took a mjor hit this week as its best win — Gardena Serra (CA) lost in state and could be a sign of thins to come. It’s second best win — Atla (Sandy, UT) — also fell. It lost eight places in the HSFB100 and appears unlikley to have a schedule that will push it into the Computer Top 25.
14 (16) | 131 | Colquitt Co. (Moultrie, GA) | 7 | 6 | 12 | 8 | – | –
Colquitt opened a tough Region 1-6A slate of games with an impressive victory over Lowndes but it went with little fanfare in the polls. The Packers moved into the Top 10 of the HSFb100 from No. 11 to No. 7 but it has not been able to crack the Scout nor Computer Poll despite wins over Mill Creek, Hoover, and now Lowndes.
15 (15) | 128 | Bingham (South Jordan, UT) | 13 | 10 | 18 | 17 | – | 19
Bingham may have also hit is cap from the polls as it did not change its point total after bettering Alta, 35-3. In the last two weeks the Miners have downed the No. 2 and the No. 8 team in Utah but have seen little upward movement. It may have impressed more by taking Bishop Gorman to overtime than anything it does in the Beehive State.
16 (17) | 125 | Skyline (Dallas, TX) | 19 | – | 15 | 20 | 15 | 11
Skyline was tinkered in a couple polls but only gained two overall points. It did not play its best against Dallas Jesuit — which is the best test within its district — and will likely buoy in the polls until the third round of the playoffs at the earliest.
17 (19) | 115 | Starkville (Mississippi) | 24 | 19 | 22 | 18 | – | 7
Starkville moved up a little in most every poll but gained its biggest boost by taking the No. 22 spot in the MaxPreps rankings. The state of Mississippi is getting a lot of respect this year with college and high school programs being ranked among the elite.
18 (24) | 102 | Paramus Catholic (Paramus, NJ) | 17 | – | 20 | 19 | – | 6
Paramus Catholic made a major jump in both the Computer — going from No. 16 to No. 6 — as well as gaining 24 points as the HSFb100 thrust the Paladins to No. 17 this week from No. 28 the week before. The spot could see a major shift this week as it will play No. 2 Don Bosco.
19 (20) | 91 | Manvel (Texas) | 6 | – | 16 | 10 | – | –
There was no movement for the Mavericks outside of a positional shift in the HSFB100 as it slid up one spot backfilling a drop made by Mater Dei. It beat South Houston 52-7 this week as many expected. It has games at Pearland Dawson and Pearland before the regular season ends.
20 (18) | 88 | Cedar Hill (Texas) | 21 | – | 17 | 21 | 17 | –
Cedar Hill continues to bounce all over the map in the rankings as this week it dropped out f the Top 25 in the Computer Poll and cost it 17 points. The team has a showdown with DeSoto in two weeks and that will probably determine a lot of its national rankings entering the playoffs.
21 (22) | 80 | Punahou (Honolulu, HI) | – | – | 24 | 23 | 10 | 23
Punahou jumped into the MaxPreps poll at No. 24 and gained 17 points but fell backwards in the Computer poll eight places nearly canceling out its point gains. There isnt a team in Hawaii that will be close to Punahou this year but that doesn’t really answer any questions about the Buff ‘N Blue.
22 (–) | 81 | Bishop Alemany (Mission Hills, CA) | 20 | – | 23 | 25 | – | 15
From not receiving a single vote last week to into four polls is an impressive jump for the SoCal program. It had an offensive explosion and set school records in a win over a nationally relevant Chaminade team. There is still a lot of meat left on the bone for the Warriors.
23 (23) | 73 | Mainland (Daytona Beach, FL) | 15 | – | 19 | 16 | – | –
Mainland got position jockeying among the three polls that is is curerntly ranked. The Buccaneers could push into the conversation as the top team in Florida over the course of the season. It has a test this week against Oviedo.
24 (–) | 65 | Rummel (Metarie, LA) | 23 | 13 | – | 22 | – | –
The USAToday has been on Rummel since the start of the season and now the HSFB100 and the PrepNation poll have joined in on that placement. It has several big wins in the early going and still has a lot of quality games to play. The team could be a sleeper for a Top 10 finish.
25 (–) | 57 | Carmel (Indiana) | – | 20 | – | 24 | – | 22
The No. 25 turnover continues this week as Hamilton fell out and Carmel comes in. The Greyhounds received the same 57 points that Hamilton had last week as well. Also, like Hamilton, it has to immediately defend its placement with a game against a local rival — last week it was Chandler for Hamilton and now it will be Warren Central versus Carmel. |
