Hattiesburg (Miss.) Oak Grove has the most famous assistant high school football coach in the country and now it also has a state title.
Brett Favre — a three-time NFL Most Valuable Player and a Super Bowl champion — helped coach the program to its first-ever state title this weekend.
Oak Grove had been ranked in the HSFB100 earlier this season and with its 14-7 victory in the Mississippi Class 6A title game over Tupelo (Miss.) Friday night may find itself in the final poll of the year.Favre has been the offensive coordinator for Oak Grove each of the last two seasons after retiring from the NFL. Following the victory Favre roamed the sideline celebrating with players and hugging his fellow coaches.
“I can’t say it’s like a Super Bowl, but it’s pretty close,” Favre told the Associated Press. “It really is. It’s a different type of feeling, but I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. It’s been a lot of fun.”
The game was scoreless at halftime but Oak Grove took the lead for good in the third quarter on a fake field goal when Kirk McCarty threw a 4-yard pass to Logan Scott.
Even with his reputation as a gun-slinger, Favre couldn’t take credit for that call.
“That was all the special teams’ coach,” Favre said laughing. “I don’t call trick plays.”
