California power plans trip to Hawaii

Bellflower (Cali.) St. John Bosco is busy battling for a 2013 HSFB100 National Championship but its dance card — and travel itinerary — is already being filled for next season.

According to multiple sources close to the negotiations, St. John Bosco has agreed to travel off the mainland for a game against Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis in 2014.

Sources also said that the team has accepted an invitation to take part in the annual Mission Viejo Football Classic. The opponent for that contest has yet to be determined.

The Braves are currently ranked No. 2 in the national rankings and has a Top 10 showdown against fifth-ranked Concord (Cali.) De La Salle on Saturday as the final auditions for both programs.

Earlier in December NationalHSFootball.com broke the news that De La Salle had agreed in principle to play Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes but would not sign the contract until after the CIF Open Division Bowl game and that is the approach that St. John Bosco will take with the St. Louis contest.

St. John Bosco has traveled to Hawaii in the past as it played against Honolulu Kamehameha in 2008, winning 23-14.

The program took four years away from out-of-state competition and it also changed coaches.

Since taking over three seasons ago, new coach Jason Negro has played Sandy (Utah) Jordan and Chandler (Ariz.) High — winning both contests — and brought the team its first PAC5 title this year.

The team will be lead into the game next season with a lot of question marks as it will be graduating much of its defense and its two leading receivers.

It will return quarterback Josh Rosen, running back Sean McGrew, and two talented offensive lineman in Matt Katnik and Zach Robertson.

Rosen is one of the highest ranked quarterbacks in the current junior class and McGrew is a 100-meter track star that just piled up 367 yards on 17 carries in the Regional Bowl victory over Corona (Cali.) Centennial.

St. Louis is coming off of a disappointing 6-3 season and looks to rebound next year.

The team is one of the more prestigious from the island state and played multiple out-of-state games as it defeated Kaysville (Utah) Davis in 2005 and lost to Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman in 2012.
