West Virginia media relations indicated that despite the tweet from Holgosen that it would release a formal statement late to announce the plans for Cogdell.
It is expected that he will coach the linebackers or defensive line position.
Cogdell spent two seasons as West Virginia as a linebacker and his decision to return to his alma mater marks another change for a powerful South Florida high school, placing Miramar on the list of programs that will now be on the hunt for a replacement.
Earlier this offseason Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) University coach Roger Harriot who went to Florida Atlantic as a running backs coach. Miami (Fla.) Northwestern mutually parted ways with Stephen Field who immediately went to Ocala (Fla.) North Marion and Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central dismissed its head coach, Roosevelt Blackmon.
In total there has been 59 coaching changes in Florida.
Cogdell was 54-12 while at Miramar and won a state title in 2009.He has been very vocal in his dedication to the program and has sent players like Geno Smith, Ivan McCartney, Stedman Bailey, Devonte Mathis, and Dante Chambers to Morgantown during his time at Miramar.
Cogdell told the Journal-News that he chose to play at West Virginia — most notably over Miami — because of his relationship with legendary Mountaineer coach Don Neelan.
“I thought he was a great guy and a great coach,” Cogdell said. “He also had a great program. He had a great family, and the Mountaineer fans were wonderful. Those are great people up there.”
Nehlen said that Cogdell had worked his way up the ranks and has impressed him with the players that he sent to West Virginia over the years.
“He is one of the most respected high school coaches in the country right now,” Nehlen said.
“He obviously had a wonderful experience at WVU, and he’s sending us some outstanding recruits.”
It will now be his mission to keep the pipeline flowing north out of Alligator Alley as he will be a key recruiter with prospects in the south.
None of the Class of 2014 prospects at Miramar have an offer from West Virginia but the Mountaineers will be looking to head back into South Florida soon.
Class of 2015 defensive backs Tyrek Cole and Kendrall McFadden each have Mountaineer offers as does receiver Kahlil Lewis and running back Alex Anderson.
