Two Miami running backs change teams

The only thing that is a constant with South Florida rosters is change.

Annually known as ‘transfer season’ added two major movers on Monday night when a pair of running backs from the Class of 2016 changed schools.

Mark Walton left Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington for Miami (Fla.) Central and then was replaced by Miami (Fla.) Columbus prospect Amir Rasul. Rasul will be leaving the Class 8A private school for the defending HSFB100 National Champions.

Tornadoes coach Ice Harris confirmed the moves via text as reports surfaced that Walton was in attendance at the Central basketball game.

“It’s all good,” Harris said. “What we do at Booker T. Washington is develop young people, watch the next young back we put out there.”

Walton has already committed to the University of Miami and figures to step in to replace four-star prospects Joseph Yearby and Dalvin Cook in the backfield for the Rockets. Central still needs to find a new quarterback, five new offensive lineman, and another wide receiver as it is losing nearly its entire offense from its No. 4 finish in the 2013 HSFB100.

Walton carried the ball 100 times for 871 yards and 14 scores this season while splitting time in the backfield at Booker T. Washington. It has been reported that Walton wants to reclassify to the Class of 2015 to graduate early and enroll in college at this time those reports remain unconfirmed.

Rasul is nearly the same build as Walton at 5-foot-10 with an additional five pounds, weighing 188-pounds and will step into the lead role for the Tornadoes. Booker T. Washington is also losing its starting quarterback but could fill its position internally as both Malik Atkins and Jaime Taylor saw playing time while Treon Harris was resting an injury at the end of the regular season. The Tornadoes will also need three offensive lineman as well as replacements for two, Division I-bound receivers.

Rasul is the second Columbus player to leave this offseason joining Class of 2015, Florida State pledge Calvin Brewton left for Miami Central earlier in the year.

The two teams just announced that they will be traveling out-of-state on Labor Day Weekend to play two Georgia foes. Booker T. Washington will be playing Tucker (Ga.) High while Central is slated to take on Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson.
