HSFB100: Wrapping up a wild Week Two

National Week Two of the high school football season wrapped up following a plethora of great games this weekend and rankings fallout produced a first in the history of the HSFB100.

For the first time in the seven year history of the rankings, two teams in the Top 10 slid back following a win over a ranked foe while three losing teams improved its previous rankings inside the Top 25.

View Past Polls:

Previous No. 2 Allen (TX) lead almost the entire game in its battle with Dutch Fork (Irmo, SC) and won, 58-53. The Eagles and Silver Foxes made the defensive side of the ball optional as star players Kyler Murray and Matt Colburn were unstoppable.

Murray scored seven of the teams touchdowns as he rushed for 183 yards and threw for 381.

Colburn carried the ball 25 times for Dutch Fork and accumulated 250 yards. He also added a 75-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.

The game moved Allen down to No. 4 from No. 2 in the HSFB100 as there is concern that its defense would be liability against better teams — while conceding that its offense may be the best in the country making that a moot point.

It also slide Dutch Fork up from No. 22 to No. 19 as the team proved that it can go toe-to-toe with one of the best programs in the country.

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) was the second team to slide in the Top 10 as the Gaels dipped from No. 5 to No. 7. This had less to do with grinding out a victory over a quality Bingham (South Jordan, UT) as much as it did with being jumped by two other Western powers — De La Salle (Concord, CA) and Bellevue (WA).

Bishop Gorman is in the middle of a stretch that will see it play five HSFB100 programs before settling into its Nevada schedule and its rankings can still buoy but De La Salle in two victories and Bellevue — which comfortably defeated a ranked Serra (Garden, CA) team earned the move up.

Bingham moved back into the Top 25 coming off of its 23-20 loss to Bishop Gorman. The Miners started the season there but slid down itself after a couple so-so performances to open the year. It accounted well for itself in defeat and moved up to No. 24.

One spot ahead of Bingham will be Miami Central (FL) which fell 21-20 to No. 15 Booker T. Washington.

The two played another tight contest which went down to the final drive where the Rockets could not make the plays to set up a game-winning field goal.

The offense for the Rockets had been a concern but the team had over 400 yards and 27 first downs in the contest but could not finish drives.

In the mythical world of football rankings pairing a team that is mostly all offense like Allen against a team that is a defensive force on the front seven like Miami Central is the cause of discussion.

RK (L) TEAM CITY (ST) RECORD LAST WEEK
1 (1) St. Thomas Aquinas Ft. Lauderdale (FL) 1-0 Idle
The Raiders were off this week and stayed at No. 1. It’s strength of schedule got a nice boost when American Heritage and Miramar played a tight contest and Don Bosco dominated its opponent.
2 (3) St. John Bosco Bellflower (CA) 2-0 def. Norwalk, 48-3
St. John Bosco checked a box in defeating Norwalk, 48-3. The season is about to get real for the Braves with seven of its eight next games against nationally relevant opponents.
3 (4) St. Edward Lakewood (OH) 2-0 def. Glenville, 47-7
St. Edward was able to handily beat Glenville this weekend. The Eagles are senior heavy while Glenville is very young and inexperienced. The result is not worth as much as it may have been in the past as Glenville is not quite up to typical standards.
4 (2) Allen Allen (TX) 2-0 def. 19 Dutch Fork, 58-53
Through two games the Eagles have allowed 94 points against. While we are very willing to tab this as one of the best three offenses in the country it is tough to think a national title — maybe even just a state title — is won with a defense that is toothless right now..
5 (6) De La Salle Concord (CA) 2-0 def. San Mateo Serra, 41-13
The Spartans have started faster than usual this season despite some concerns entering the year. It will take a major step-up in competition this week as it will play HSFB100 No. 40-ranked Byrnes.
6 (9) Bellevue Bellevue (WA) 1-0 def. No. 48 Serra, 31-14
We had to wait until Week Two of the season to see Bellevue but it was worth it. The Wolverines were as advertised in beating Serra at The Honor Bowl.
7 (5) Bishop Gorman Las Vegas (NV) 3-0 def. No. 24 Bingham, 23-20.
This could have been a trap game or it could show how tough it is to take the schedule on that Bishop Gorman has chosen. The Gaels won a slugfest with Bingham and now it has to stretch out for a trackmeet with Corona Centennial.
8 (7) Katy Katy (TX) 2-0 def. Travis, 55-0
The Tigers were able to get the second string players reps in the third quarter as this game was out of hand early. The lone test on the regular season slate for Katy awaits this coming week against The Woodlands.
9 (11) Manvel Manvel (TX) 2-0 def. No. 86 North Shore, 42-17
It was hard not to push Manvel to the top of Texas after two weeks. It has downed Houston Westfield as well as North Shore to open the season and has played physical football which was needed. It may not be fair but the memory of being bullied by Katy last season sticks out still.
10 (8) Cedar Hill Cedar Hill (TX) 2-0 def. Arlington Bowie, 48-30
For the second straight week, there were a few too many points put up here to feel very good about. The team is reliant on offense and that could haunt it later in the year. Another shootout is expected this week versus Dallas Skyline.
11 (12) Folsom Folsom (CA) 2-0 def. Clovis North, 49-13
The Bulldogs may be the Cedar Hill of Northern California. It has an offense that can keep pace with anyone while its defense may be a weak link. So far this year it has been better but it has not been tested yet either.
12 (14) Mater Dei Santa Ana (CA) 2-0 def. Villa Park, 63-0
Nothing to see here, Mater Dei did what it was supposed to do and rolled. It avoided major injury and goes into a bye healthy.
13 (19) St. Peter’s Prep Jersey City (NJ) 1-0 def. Wise, 35-9
St. Peter’s Prep coach Rich Hansen called his team too business-like this offseason. It opened the year in a matter-of-fact win over Wise. The Marauders did not look like it was having much fun so much as they were punching the clock and getting the job done.
14 (35) Don Bosco Ramsey (NJ) 1-0 def. No. 42 St. Joe’s, 35-7
STOCK UP: While it should not have been a shock that Don Bosco clubbed St. Joe’s it was a complete victory even if it was only a two quarter game. The offense could be the most explosive in a number of years with Wes McKoy being able to run and pass at quarterback.
15 (13) Booker T. Washington Miami (FL) 3-0 def. No. 23 Miami Central, 23-20
Booker T. Washington bent but didn’t break versus Miami Central. It gave up over 400 yards and 27 first downs but only 20 points. The Tornadoes opened the year with three tough tests and came out unblemished.
16 (18) Mainland Daytona Beach (FL) 2-0 def. Spruce Creek, 42-0
Mainland has not been tested like the other top teams in Florida so we may be too early on this train but 83-0 through two weeks has us believing it is for real.
17 (85) Gonzaga Washington (DC) 1-0 def. No. 34 Centreville, 31-14
STOCK UP: Gonzaga dominated a Top 10 team from Pennsylvania and followed it up with bettering the top team from Virginia. We should not have secondguessed our preseason evalautions of this program.
18 (16) Colquitt County Moultrie (GA) 3-0 def. Crisp County, 55-0
The Packers maintained focus this week and beat Crisp County like a Top 25 team should. It has been an issue with this program over the last five years that lapses in focus have resulted in poor performances.
19 (22) Dutch Fork Irmo (SC) 1-1 lost to No. 4 Allen, 58-53
Dutch Fork was unable to overcome the offensive firepower on the raod versus Allen but it more than accounted for itself in the contest. The loss was impressive and helps further validate South Carolina football.
20 (17) Chandler Chandler (AZ) 2-0 def. Buena, 56-10
Chandler drops again despite winning. The team has gone from No. 13 to No. 20 in two weeks. Its schedule it about to get fun with three of its next four games being against nationally relevant opposition.
21 (15) Buford Buford (GA) 3-0 def. McEachern, 27-20
Buford has now posted two quality victories in the first three weeks. There is a few talented teams in the Class 4A path for the Wolves so that season is far from over.
22 (24) American Heritage Plantation (FL) 1-1 def. No. 33 Miramar, 30-26
American Heritage held out quarterback Torrance Gibson late into the third quarter and it showed. Once he returned the Patriots took over the game and secured the victory.
23 (25) Miami Central Miami (FL) 2-1 lost to No. 15 Washington, 21-20
The Rockets looked better in a loss versus Booker T. Washington than a victory agaisnt Stephenson. The offense is improving but it is still finding its way.
24 (29) Bingham South Jordan (UT) 2-1 lost to No. 7 Bishop Gorman, 23-20
Bingham fell behind, stormed back, then lost the lead. This was a great high school football game that purists from coast-to-coast would have nodded with approval of.
25 (30) Acadiana Lafayette (LA) 1-0 def. Northside, 55-6
It is a small tweak but Acadiana is more balanced on both sides of the ball than Warren Easton and took over the No. 1 spot in Louisiana because of it.
26 (21) Warren Easton New Orleans (LA) 1-0 def. St. Amant, 40-32
STOCK DOWN: Defense, defense, defense. Warren Easton has to tighten up that side of the ball to win the state.
27 (23) Servite Anaheim (CA) 1-1 def. Corona, 45-17
28 (26) DeSoto DeSoto (TX) 2-0 def. No. 99 Eastern Christian, 54-34
STOCK DOWN: A win is a win but the team suffered the loss of its starting quarterback to a broken ankle. The backup played well and extended the lead so it didn’t force a tumble down the rankings — as we have we have done in the past when a team loses a DI talent at the position. DeSoto will be tested a few more times this season and the ranking will take care of itself.
29 (33) Mountain Pointe Phoenix (AZ) 3-0 def. Cesar Chavez, 48-6
30 (34) Clay Chalkville Pinson (AL) 3-0 def. Hillcrest, 48-26
31 (36) Poly Long Beach (CA) 2-0 def. Narbnne, 34-21
32 (37) Steele Cibolo (TX) 2-0 def. United South, 62-0
33 (28) Miramar Miramar (FL) 1-1 lost to No. 22 Am. Heritage, 30-26.
34 (20) Centreville Clifton (VA) 0-1 lost to No. 17 Gonzaga, 31-14
35 (41) Spanish Fort Spanish Fort (AL) 3-0 def. Davidson, 38-7
36 (42) Blackman Murfreesboro (TN) 3-0 def. Riverdale, 49-16
37 (43) Oakland Murfreesboro (TN) 2-1 def. Siegel, 49-16
38 (44) Maryville Maryville (TN) 3-0 def. West, 31-16
39 (50) Flanagan Pembroke Pines (FL) 2-0 def. Fort Lauderdale, 37-8
40 (51) Byrnes Duncan (SC) 2-0 Idle
41 (NR) Elder Cincinnati (OH) 2-0 def. Lakota West, 51-21
42 (27) St. Joseph’s Prep Philadelphia (PA) 1-1 lost to No. 14 Don Bosco, 35-7
43 (NR) Grayson Loganville (GA) 2-0 def. Langston Hughes, 26-16
44 (47) Moeller Cincinnati (OH) 2-0 def. Covington Catholic, 39-0
45 (60) Alemany Mission Hills (CA) 2-0 def. Eastside Catholic, 31-14
46 (99) Punahou Honolulu (HI) 2-0 def. Damien, 52-6
STOCK UP: Without better competition it is tough to tell where Punahou should be nationally but right now it is standing much taller than anyone in Hawaii.
47 (84) Chaminade West Hills (CA) 2-0 def. Hart, 44-21
48 (10) Serra Gardena (CA) 1-2 lost to No. 6 Bellevue, 31-14.
49 (67) Jenks Jenks (OK) 1-0 def. Bixby, 66-20
50 (65) Carroll Southlake (TX) 2-0 def. No. 51 Union, 42-41
