Polls homogenizing as 24 of 25 included in at least four rankings

The six major polls are starting to look more alike as each week passes and more teams show unworthy of placement among the elite.

Of those included in the Media Compilation Top 25 the 24 highest ranking programs were all including in four of the six polls. No team was ranked in just three polls which created a major gap between No. 24 and No. 25 this week.

Outside of the two dozen teams to have been placed by four polls there were six teams included in the rankings of two polls and another 15 that were given the nod in a single entities Top 25.

View Past Polls:

The six major polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.

The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each Tuesday of the season.

For the fourth time this year there is a new No. 1 team in the Media Compilation Top 25 with Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) moving to the top spot after St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) lost on Friday night. Interestingly, St. Edward only slid to the No. 17 spot in the compilation while the team that beat the Eagles — Elder (Cincinnati, OH) — was only placed inside the Top 25 by one of the major outlets.

Three teams moved out from the bottom of the compilation this week which marks the lowest turnover since the season started.

Here is the complete Media Compilation Top 25:

RK (L) POINTS TEAM HSFB100 USAT Max PN Scout CPU
1 (2) 236 Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) 1 4 1 1 1 2
In a climate of polling that has largely went with a No. 1 team until it loses this is a great spot for Don Bosco to be in coming off of a bye week. There is a lot of football to be played but it is unlikely that many polls will risk the ridicule of dropping the New Jersey powerhouse unless it falters on the field no matter what teams behind it do. Don Bosco has two wins over St. Joseph Prep (Philadelphia, PA) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and can still add three more quality wins before the season is out. Five wins may be enough to claim another Media Compilation title.
2 (3) 229 Allen (Texas) 4 3 2 2 2 4
Allen has become a buoy now that it is into district play while other teams still have nationally relevant games on the schedule. The Eagles gained a cumulative three points this week as it moved up to fill the spot left by St. Edward. The Computer dropped it two spots as it may have subtracted strength of schedule points after the Eagles OOS victory was diminished with Dutch Fork losing.
3 (4) 228 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) 3 1 4 4 3 3
St. John Bosco may present the greatest threat to the No. 1 spot moving forward as the Braves have one of the most demanding schedules in the country. It gained six points this week but has a nationally televised game against No. 4 Bishop Gorman on Friday. It would stand to reason that if the Braves impress in a similar fashion as Don Bosco did versus St. Thomas Aquinas that it will gain points and move at least to the No. 2 position, leapfrogging Allen. It faces current No. 7 Mater Dei in the regular season and would likely add a victory over either No. 5 De La Salle or No. 13 Folsom to close the season. Would voters be able to ignore four Top 25 victories?
4 (7) 215 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) 8 2 5 6 9 1
The Gaels moved up in every poll this week and gained major points as the HSFB100 reversed course and bumped the team 13 spots after seeing more of new quarterback Tate Martell. The Gaels are the No. 1 team in the Computer model this week, gaining three spots. It could lock up the top spot in the algorithm if it downs St. John Bosco and the Braves go through the California slate of games.
5 (6) 212 De La Salle (Concord, CA) 2 10 6 5 4 7
De La Salle rolled Del Oro this week and gained 10 cumulative points in the compilation, moving up three spots at USAToday as well as the Computer. The Spartans are likely closing in on being a buoy as it plays Servite this week and then faces a stretch of games that will not provide a single nationally relevant contest.
6 (5) 211 Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) 9 5 3 3 5 10
The Tornadoes rolled this week over Miami Jackson but with the loss of Cocoa to Louisville Trinity it may have been hurt more in the longterm with strength of schedule pundits. Booker T. Washington is certainly a buoy in the polls and will gain and lose points based on the teams around them.
7 (8) 180 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) 6 11 7 18 19 5
Mater Dei slid up a spot or two in most polls just accounting for the movement of losing teams ahead of it. Ultimately Mater Dei is a major factor in the national title hunt as it could get two shots at St. John Bosco to go with games against vote-getters Servite and JSerra as well as a potential game versus De La Salle or Folsom. It is currently the No. 3 team in California but it has a better chance at the national title than the No. 1 team in Florida.
8 (10) 162 Gonzaga (Washington, DC) 14 9 18 17 17 9
Gonzaga got the slide-it-up treatment from most every poll as the team gained a couple spots across the board. It, presumably, came from losses by teams previously in front than anything show in an expected win. Gonzaga has Good Counsel, DeMatha, and St. John’s still on the schedule although two of those three already has a bad loss on the resume.
9 (9) 160 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 24 17 17 10 10 8
St. Thomas Aquinas stayed ranked No. 9 in the compilation poll but lost 10 cumulative votes. The majority of that damage came from losing 13 spots in the HSFB100. The team tried breaking in a new quarterback and was without three suspended starters and it showed. At halftime it had just 32 rushing yards on 26 carries and zero completed passes with five fumbles. The team needed special teams to save the day as the offense looked worse than it did versus Don Bosco. It was not a Top 10 showing for the former No. 1 team in the compilation.
10t (11) 158 Buford (Georgia) 22 18 14 11 8 15
Buford moved up two spots in the HSFB100 as well as the USAToday, it gained one at Scout and slid one in the Computer. There is nothing on the Wolves schedule that is nationally relevant until at least the quarterfinals of the playoffs where it shold be tested the last two weeks of the season depending on how the brackets fall.
10t (12) 153 St. Peter’s (Jersey City, NJ) 5 6 11 9 16
St. Peter’s gained a slide-up spot in all five polls that have it ranked and remained unranked by the Computer. The Mauraders have plenty of talent just not many games that can test that skill. It will have a chance to change that perception with potential playoff games with No. 1 Don Bosco and vote-getter, Paramus Catholic.
12 (14) 135 DeSoto (Texas) 10 23 9 15 18 16
The Eagles gained its points by going from unranked to No. 23 in the USAToday but it lost a handful where is dropped in the Computer algorithm. The team played well in beating a quality CIbolo Steele team that is nationally ranke in some polls. The Eagles also welcomed back defensive tackle Bryce English which should help improve the defense. It still has a game with No. 22 Cedar Hill and could face No. 2 Allen in the playoffs. There is plenty of upward potential for this team.
13 (13) 149 Folsom (California) 13 10 16 11 6
Folsom gained slide-up points this week from several polls. It was jumped in the HSFB100 by DeSoto which was mirrored in the Media Compilation Poll. It also gained with the Computer which may have been a strength of schedule uptick as its opening week win over Cathedral Catholic was bolstered by Cathedral Catholic knocking off Helix in San Diego.
14 (15t) 135 Miami Central (Miami, FL) 16 8 12 13 21
Miami Central still has a few namebrand games on the schedule so it isn’t quite a buoy at this point. It gained three spots in the HSFB100 and slid up in three other polls. The Rockets remain unranked by the Computer as its margin of victory over Hoover (AL) and Stephenson (GA) likely do not factor into the formula very well.
15 (15t) 124 Bellevue (Washington) 12 13 8 7
Bellevue went back into Washington play and has become out-of-sight out-of-mind with the path to another state title and undefeated season. In previous years — when inheritance polls were more prevelant — the Wolverines may have been given Top 10 billings because of what the program has done but that is not the case anymore as more teams are playing other elite programs. There is a proving ground mentality and Bellevue is likley a non-factor for the national title in the current climate without a major victory to point to.
16 (17) 119 Colquitt Co. (Moultrie, GA) 15 7 15 8
Colquitt won another relatively meaningless game this week and it showed with nominal movement in the polls. The Packers are just outside of the Top 15 but have a great opportunity for major movement. The top team in Georgia has scheduled games with Lowndes, Valdsta, and Camden County as well as one of the toughest playoff brackets in the country to potentnially navigate. It is currently unranked by Scout and the Computer which means there are a lot of points out there to be gained.
17t (1) 109 St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) 19 13 12 11
Four polls stayed with the Eagles and wrote off the loss to Elder as a fluke. The USAToday and PrepNation abandoned ship with the loss. The Eagles have enough on the schedule to prove which was the correct move.
17t (19) 109 Archbishop Wood (Warminster, PA) 23 14 6 12
Wood made an upward move in the Media Compilation as it gained a few spots at MaxPreps and in the Computer. Both the HFB100 and the USAToday remain skeptical of the top team in Pennsylvania. The HSFB100 is further from moving the team in as it is well outside the Top 50 right now.
19 (20) 105 Skyline (Dallas, TX) 23 19 21 20 17
Skyline saw minor movement from the four polls that had it ranked last week but gained 18 when it was placed at No. 23 in the HSFB100 this week. Like all teams in Texas the playoffs will be the arbitor of which team belongs ranked where. Skyline could have an easier path than most into the regional finals but that still will provide three tough games to win a state title.
20 (18) 102 Manvel (Texas) 7 20 13 23
Manvel won an expected decision this week but slid down two spots and lost seven cumulative spots in the compilation poll. The Computer was a harsh critic and move the team down nine this week. The bet is that it was a strength of schedule adjustment as its win over North Shore was marginalized as that team lost another game this weekend.
21 (23) 96 Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ) 17/b> 12 17 23
Mountain Pointe downed Chandler this week but barely moved the needle in the media compilation poll sliding up two spots after knocking Chandler out from its No. 24 position. It was a three-poll team last week and only PrepNation moved it in after the victory. The Pride plays Hamilton this week and that could prompt Scout and the Computer to move in or it could show the other four that no team in Arizona belongs.
22 (–) 90 Cedar Hill (Texas) 25 21 25 23 21
Cedar Hill went from No. 7 to barely receiving a single Top 25 placement to back in to the bottom of five polls. The team still has a game against DeSoto and then the Division II playoffs to determine its final placement. It seems like this group got a benefit boost from its preseason rankings as more teams fall out and fewer have stepped up.
23 (–) 89 Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) 24 20 7 24
Scout is the lone poll that has been high on Moeller all season with the Computer keeping the team towards the bottom of its rankings. This week MaxPreps and PrepNation came aboard giving the Crusaders four polls to its name. It will be tested immedatly — and often — with its schedule and the Ohio Division I playoffs.
24 (22) 81 Bingham (South Jordan, UT) 212 16 22 24
Bingham got a bump by three polls and no movement in the others. It will need a Bishop Gorman victory to gain the points in the Computer Poll and is still a bit out of range at Scout. Utah football is improving but the Miners appear tied to the 23-20 setback against the Gaels.
25 (–) 55 Punahou (Honolulu, HI) –/b> 14 13
The Computer has historically been favorable to the Buff ‘N Blue and it has been again this season. Scout has jumped on board and made the Hawaii power the top team to only get votes from two polls. The team is quite unlikley to lose a game this season and may get some late season attention from other polls filling the bottom rungs of its Top 25.
