Preseason picks dropped by all six polls, new Media No. 1

The shift started last week when the USAToday moved Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) from its No. 1 spot to No. 3 after a less-than-impressive performance against Bingham (South Jordan, UT).

It gained steam Friday as Cedar Hill (TX) — MaxPreps’ preseason pick at No. 1 — fell to Skyline (Dallas, TX) and the forced change accelerated out of control when St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) — the No. 1 team in the HSFB100, PrepNation, Scout, and the Freeman Computer — was downed by Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) on Saturday.

With all six polls toppled over it has paved the way for St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) to move into the top spot in the Media Compilation Top 25.

View Past Polls:

The Eagles ascended to the top spot on the back of a 42-0 trouncing of St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) and has outscored Gilman (Baltimore, MD), Glenville (Cleveland, OH), and St. Joseph by a combined margin of 127-14 on the season.

St. Edward is the third team to take to the top spot as Allen (TX) and St. Thomas Aquinas have already been displaced.

The six major polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.

The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each Tuesday of the season.

St. Thomas Aquinas stayed well within the Media Compilation Top 25 as it received votes in all polls and remained No. 9 in current tally.

RK (L) POINTS TEAM HSFB100 USAT Max PN Scout CPU
1 (2) 238 St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) 1 3 1 1 1 1
St. Edward jumped to the top spot in most every poll this week after everyone scrambled for a new No. 1. The largest jump came at MaxPreps where the Eagles went from No. 5 to No. 1. USAToday was the lone poll not to have the team at the top. There is more on that to come.
2 (13) 230 Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) 2 5 2 3 2 2
The Ironmen jumped in every poll on the back of a 24-7 dismantling of previous No. 1, St. Thomas Aquinas. Don Bosco thrust itself into the national title conversation with the beating and combining its talent with the schedule there will be a debate for the top spots through the end of the year. The largest gain was made in the Computer rankings were the Ironmen went from unranked to No. 2.
3 (3) 226 Allen (Texas) 5 4 3 2 3 3
Allen has become a buoy now that it is into district play while other teams still have nationally relevant games on the schedule. The Eagles gained a cumulative one point this week as it checked the box in a win. Playoffs will be where the final determination is made on this squad.
4 (4) 222 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) 4 1 5 5 4 5
St. John Bosco may present the greatest threat to the No. 1 spot moving forward as the Braves have one of the most demanding schedules in the country. It gained just two points over last week but based on current rankings there exists the real possibility it adds five games against teams in the Media Top 25. Its strength of schedule would be an undeniable No. 1 come the end of the season and make for a tough decision in many polls.
5 (6) 204 Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) 10 6 4 4 7 11
The Tornadoes are into its run of wins prior to the playoffs which will likely turn this team into a buoy as well. It gained five spots in the HSFB100 and lost two at Scout as well as three in the Computer poll. It stands to gain the most points in the HSFB100 as four teams ahead of it will play one another.
6 (8) 202 De La Salle (Concord, CA) 3 13 7 6 5 10
De La Salle gained big pointed in multiple polls this week after beating Byrnes on national television. It moved up seven in the USAT — which started the Spartans unranked and is still lowest on the team. It also added six spots at PrepNation as well as four from both Scout and the Computer.
7 (5) 195 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) 21 2 6 8 10 4
The Gaels are a curious case this week as it needed a miracle finish to defeat a quality Corona Centennial team a week after a comeback victory versus Bingham. The HSFB100 was the stiffest in its penalty by moving Bishop Gorman to No. 21, dropping it 14 spots after two uneven performances. Four other polls dropped Bishop Gorman a few spots but the USAToday moved it up to No. 2. It was a week after the USAToday dropped it two spots for a subpar performance versus Bingham but a week ahead of a televised game with St. John Bosco. Is the newspaper trying to build up a No. 1 vs No. 2 as well as boost its relationship with ESPN with this seemingly hard to explain move back up?
8 (10) 171 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) 8 11 8 22 20 6
Mater Dei was idle this week gained six spots at MaxPreps, four from the HSFB100, and three at USAToday. Only the HSFB100 moved Mater Dei ahead of Bishop Gorman as the two share a common opponent in Corona Centennial. Mater Dei dominated, 38-18, while Bishop Gorman escaped by the skin of its teeth, 43-42.
9 (1) 170 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 11 19 16 12 11 7
As expected St. Thomas Aquinas dropped in every poll with its loss to Don Bosco. The computer was the most forgiving of the defeat after being the most harsh on the Raiders through the first three weeks of the season. The USAToday jumped back the furthest as it nearly pushed the program out of the Top 20. St. Thomas Aquinas doesn’t have time to sulk as it plays Miramar this week — a team that has won the last three contests in the series.
10 (12) 157 Gonzaga (Washington, DC) 15 10 18 19 18 9
Gonzaga got the slide-it-up treatment from most every poll as the team gained a couple spots across the board. It, presumably, came from losses by teams previously in fron than anything show in an expected win against Georgetown Prep. Gonzaga has Good Counsel, DeMatha, and St. John’s still on the schedule.
11 (11) 154 Buford (Georgia) 24 20 14 11 9 14
Buford was shuffled in every poll this week but gained just one cumulative point and maintained its No. 11 spot in the Media Compilation Top 25. The team was idle and is not into its region play. Like several others, Buford is now a buoy until playoffs as it doesn’t have any games of consequence remaining.
12 (15) 153 St. Peter’s (Jersey City, NJ) 6 7 12 10 17
St. Peter’s moved up aggressively in the HSFB100 climing seven spots as well as six each in the USAToday and PrepNation after an impressive showing on ESPN against Bergen Catholic. It went unchanged at Scout and remained unranked by the Computer.
13 (14) 144 Folsom (California) 12 11 18 12 8
A week after putting Folsom into its Top 25 the Scout poll made another major jump in moving the Bulldogs up 10 spots. Otherwise it was a relatively quiet week in the rankings. The USAToday still is of the mind that Folsom is not as good as Eden Prairie (MN) — among other teams that is has ranked — as Folsom has yet to crack its Top 25.
14 (20) 135 DeSoto (Texas) 13 10 16 19 12
Pollsters at the HSFB100 can not figure out what to do with DeSoto. It has moved the team from outside the Top 25, to inside, back out, and now firmly back in over the course of the season. The Eagles went from No. 26 — and not registering points — to No. 13 in that poll this week following a sound beating of a talented South Oak Cliff program. The other polls stayed on point with DeSoto.
15t (179t) 127 Bellevue (Washington) 7 14 9 7
Bellevue bettered Alta and gained 10 spots in the USAToday poll a week after finally cracking its rankings. It also added six spots in PrepNation. The other four polls remained consistent on the placement of the top Washington team — even as it isnt ranked by Scout nor the Computer.
15t (16) 127 Miami Central (Miami, FL) 20 9 13 14 22
Miami Central still has a few namebrand games on the schedule so it isn’t quite a buoy at this point. It also has plenty of potential points to gain in the HSFB100, Scout, and the Computer.
17 (17t) 116 Colquitt Co. (Moultrie, GA) 16 8 15 9
Colquitt won a relatively meaningless game this week against Enterprise and it showed with nominal movement in the polls. It still has games with Lowndes to open October and Camden County when the calendar hits November plus the Georiga playoffs. This team could finish in the Top 10 with an unbeaten season.
18 (19) 106 Manvel (Texas) 9 20 13 16
Manvel idle this week and it didn’t move in the polls. With the schedule in front of the Mavericks it doesn’t appear to have a chance to impress pollsters prior to its Nov. 7 game with Pearland. Expect it to buoy between now and then with the possibility for a lowend ranking in some polls as other programs suffer losses.
19 (21) 103 Archbishop Wood (Warminster, PA) 25 15 6 15
Wood made an upward move in the Media Compilation as it gained 16 points with the No. 25 spot in the MaxPreps poll. It had small tinkers from other polls as it won again this week.
20 (–) 83 Skyline (Dallas, TX) 19 21 21 20
Skyline moved into the back end of four polls after beating previously-ranked Cedar Hill. Most every poll had been backing off Cedar Hill as it went down the compilation every Tuesday since the preseason poll was released. Now in district play it may be tough for Skyline to make a major move until the playoffs when Texas really starts to show its hand.
21 (24) 79 Ben Davis (Indianapolis, IN) 18 13 13
The Computer algorithm gave a big boost to Ben Davis this week as it moved the Giants up 10 places after it shutout Center Grove. With games on the road versus Warren Central and Carmel in the next three weeks this could be a team that moves up dramatically or disappears completely.
22 (22) 78 Bingham (South Jordan, UT) 22 17 22 25
Bingham checked a box as it got back into Utah action this weekend. It has games with Brighton, Alta, and Jordan prior to the playoffs. Those games may not impress pollsters and the Miners may be tied to its loss versus Bishop Gorman more than anything else it does this year.
23 (–) 75 Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ) 19/b> 12 17
Mountain Pointe went from receiving votes to inside the Media Compilation as the HSFB100 joined the USAToday and MaxPreps by rankings the program. It has a showdown with Chandler this week and so it is a safe bet one of these two leave the poll next Tuesday.
24t (–) 72 Chandler (Arizona) 18 23 20
Chandler joined Mountain Pointe as a team entering the rankings but shares the risk of leaving just the same. It defeated a quality Valor Christian team this week in Colorado.
24t (–) 72 Poly (Long Beach, CA) 21 21 19
Poly was just outside of the poll last week and just inside this week. It will take on Corona Centennial — which already has played Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman — this week. It will test the Jackrabbits on both side of the ball.
