Sunday Stock Watch: Selling off six, turning over Louisiana

Pushing towards the close of September and there is more to sell than buy in the Sunday Stock Watch.

The new feature from NationalHSFootball.com takes the place of HSFB100 Rankings Preview but will contain similar elements and as National Week Three of the high school football season saw every state take the field there were results that stood out more than others.

Archived Stock Watch:

We start in the Bayou where the stock has dropped enough that we have to sell.

Acadiana (Lafayette, LA) started the season in the conversation for the No. 1 ranking in the state but settled in at No. 2. A week after being bettered by Shades Valley (Birmingham, AL) at the Battle on the Border the Rams slide from No. 25 to No. 71. This week the team was trounced by No. 75 Archbishop Rummel (Metarie, LA) to the tune of 34-9 and it is time to move on from Acadiana.

Likewise, Calvary Baptist (Shreveport, LA) will be making an exit from the HSFB100 come Monday after it fell 42-13 against Byrd (Shreveport, LA).

The Cavaliers have been sliding backwards after starting the year No. 34 in the preseason but was just No. 48 entering this week as concerns over its lineplay began to surface. Against Byrd those concerns became a reality as quarterback Shea Patterson had no time to throw and was lucky to come out of the contest without injury. Calvary is likely to win its state championship but has shown not worthy of being a HSFB100 program.

While those two are being sold there will be two in the state that are being purchased.

Byrd was relentless with its Wing-T and rotated in two strong units on the defensive line. The program is 3-0 on the year and has outscored opponents 83-20 the last two weeks.

The Yellow Jackets will likely be joined by Hahnville (Boutte, LA).

Hahnville has a victory over Salmen (Slidell, LA) as well as Landry Walker (New Orleans, LA) with a triple overtime loss to Rummel, 37-31.

The Tigers are coached by Nick Saltaformaggio — who won the National Coach of the Year Award in 2013 after leading East Jefferson (Metarie, LA) to a state title and downing Edna Karr (New Orleans< LA) and Neville (LA) along the way -- and has plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.

The two teams at the top of Louisiana leads a list that of those that we are selling more than buying.

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) — The up and down evaluations of Bishop Gorman now swings decidedly into buy mode with the move to Tate Martell as the fulltime quarterback. Martell sparked the Gaels to a comeback victory over Centennial (Corona, CA) and led them to a dismantling of Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA). With Martell in the game — replacing pro-style quarterback Danny Hong — the offense has more life and explosiveness and his propensity for a highlight reel play every time he touches the ball has this team in a conversation for the national title as it has become more complete under his direction. Look for Bishop Gorman to make a major move from No. 21 this week.
Starkville (Mississippi) — It is time to move Starkville to the No. 1 spot in Mississippi and up in the rankings. It entered the week just behind South Panola (Batesville, MS) but with three wins over Oxford (MS), West Point (MS), and Florence (AL) there is no debate as to which team should be considered the best of the bunch right now. Quarterback Brady Davis is now up to 18 touchdown passes on the season, Jacquez Horsely can catch the ball out of the backfield as well as gain 100 yards per contest, and the defense is holding down quality offenses. This is a team that could move into the Top 50.

St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) — We will not be selling all of the stock on St. Edward but the team was not ready for Elder (Cincinnati, OH) and it showed in the loss. St. Ed is still the pick to win Ohio and will be ranked as the top team in the state despite the loss but it will be moving down into the mid-20s. This loss feels more like a overlooking the opposition setback than a signal of things to come. We may be in the minority with this choice and while acknowledging the stock is down the team is not out.
Dutch Fork (Irmo, SC) — Maybe we got too high on Dutch Fork because of its competitive play against Allen (Texas) but it was soundly beaten by Dorman (Roebuck, SC) this weekend and it is time to back off of the Silver Foxes. Dorman came in ranked No. 5 in the state and just outside the HSBF100 and showed that South Carolina will be more competitive than a battle between Byrnes (Duncan, SC) and Dutch Fork. This is a double stock watch as we are buying Dorman, too.
Jenks (Oklahoma) – It is now a losing streak for Jenks as the team fell to Owasso (OK) for the first time since 1993, 7-6. Jenks was stopped on the Owasso two, intercepted twice in Owasso territory, and missed a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Since we are in the business of rankings and not listing the standings we will still have Jenks over Owasso but neither will be in the HSFB100 come Monday. Owasso has now ended losing streaks versus all the top teams in Oklahoma since 2011. It beat Union (Tulsa, OK) in 11 and 12, and so far this season it beat Broken Arrow (OK) and Jenks.
Northside (Warner Robins, GA) — We fall for this team every year and need to learn the lesson. Northside lost to Jones County on Friday and will tumble from the HSFB100. Jones scored more points than any team in the last 21 years against Northside and improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1999. Northside was a team that came off the preseason radar and moved into the HSFB100 due in large part to a strength of schedule boost by beating North Cobb (Kennesaw, GA) and the daisy chain boosted by North Cobb’s victories.
Maryville (Tennessee) — The Rebels won this week, defeating Hardin Valley but it was not a pretty, 16-3 decision. While Maryville had looked suspect in previous games it was again shaky as the team was tied at 3 into the second half. It then lost starting quarterback Tyler Vaught early in the third quarter and he did not return. The injury news has not been released on when Vaught may be back and won’t be prior to the HSFB100 rankings. If he is out for a long period of time there is plenty of concern. If he isn’t that worry is obviously lessened. We will back off of its No. 35 ranking until that news is announced.
Spanish Fort (Alabama) — Similar to Maryville we have to back off of Spanish Fort a little bit this week as its quarterback, Tyler Cameron, was injured in the teams victory this week. Cameron is the top-ranked quarterback in the state and within a very difficult Class 6A his absence makes the team go from potential favorites to quite vulnerable. His longterm availability has not been addressed so look for the team to slide down a little from its No. 70 ranking.
