As the broken record spins, there is a new No. 1 in the HSFB100.
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) ascends to the top spot after previous No. 1 Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) fell to then-No. 17 Paramus Catholic (Paramus, NJ) during National Week Seven, 21-14.
The Gaels are the fourth team to claim the position this season as the western powerhouse climbed to the rankings largely based on its strength of schedule
Bishop Gorman opened its season with a playoff-like run through six quality opponents in six weeks — of which four are still ranked in the HSFB100.
Its best win is a 34-31 decision over No. 9 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) in a game that was not as close as the final score.
It also has a 23-20 overtime victory over No. 15 Bingham (South Jordan, UT), a miraculous 43-42 comeback win against No. 26 Centennial (Corona, CA), and an impressive 48-27 conquest of No. 38 Servite (Anaheim, CA).
The four Top 50 victories are enough to have the team in the drivers seat while other teams are forced to finish the season unblemished, with more impressive performances, against an equal strength of schedule.
Bishop Gorman also owns victories over Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and Brophy (Phoenix, AZ) to push itself to six quality wins.
Since heading into its Nevada portion of the schedule it has outscored two opponents by a combined 140-0 and will not add any additional nationally relevant victories.
As the number of challengers to the title drops with each passing week the likelihood that Bishop Gorman hoists the national championship trophy increases.
The HSFB100 title declaration will likely go down to the final weekend of the season as No. 2 De La Salle (Concord, CA), a trio of Texas teams, and a few from Florida are still in play and each has state finals on the same date.
Threats from No. 3 Colquitt County (Moultrie, GA), No. 4 Paramus Catholic and darkhorses yet to emerge can still challenge for the top spot.
The rest of the moves are below in the updated HSFB100:

RK (L) | TEAM CITY (ST) | RECORD | LAST WEEK
1 (3) | Bishop Gorman Las Vegas (NV) | 8-0 | def. Durango, 77-0
The Bishop is not going to lose a game going forward and it may not lose its spot atop the rankings thanks to its grueling start to the season. Having four Top 50 wins into October is as impressive a start to the season as we have seen and the placement has been earned on the field.
2 (2) | De La Salle Concord (CA) | 7-0 | def. James Logan, 51-7
The Spartans are in the nationally irrelevant portion of the schedule as it has not lost to a NorCal foe in over 250 games. The 51-7 win over James Logan is checking the box. De La Salle may be more complete this year than it has been since its last national title team in 2003 and it will have a chance to show its worth in December — but it may get pushed down the ladder before that point.
3 (7) | Colquitt County Moultrie (GA) | 7-0 | def. Lee County, 58-14
There is a different focus to this Colquitt County team than in past years and it provides more confidence to move it up the rankings. The Packers have a recent history of stubbing its toe in the regular season but has kept its foot on the gas to date. It has two HSFB100 wins and can add two more before the playoffs in the Peach State.
4 (17) | Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) | 6-0 | def. No. 8 Don Bosco, 21-14
STOCK UP: Paramus Catholic was balanced on offense and ferocious on defense in its victory over Don Bosco. Its defensive front may be the best in the country and it would take a very solid offensive line to contain the pass rush it generates. This is a team that can push to a HSFB100 National Title.
5 (4) | Allen (Texas) | 7-0 | def. Hebron, 44-10
Allen won another district game with relative ease and stayed in the Top 5 for another week. The defense is improving but it is not at a place that inspires much confidence for moving up the rankings until it is proven on the field. Plano West could provide a test in a primer before the playoffs. An undefeated season will be three in a row for Allen.
6 (5) | DeSoto (Texas) | 6-0 | def. Mainsfield, 49-21
DeSoto is similar to the Colquitt County of Texas as it has the look of a title threat but has let its guard down at the wrong time. Defensively the group looks to be improved and — like Colquitt — it could be a serious threat for a state and national title.
7 (6) | Manvel (Texas) | 6-0 | def. Pearland Dawson, 62-35
If we are nitpicking then it would be to note the Mavericks gave up 35 points but when it put up 62 against a quality Dawson team it is easy to overlook. There are still sources that tell us Manvel is the third team in Houston while we are sold on the Mavericks and have the team third in Texas.
8 (1) | Don Bosco Ramsey (NJ) | 3-1 | lost to No. 4 Paramus Catholic, 21-14
The Ironmen didn’t get a turnover or a big special teams play in its loss to Paramus Catholic as both have become a signature of the program in its nationally relevant contests. The defense is still very good but we may have overestimated the effectiveness of the offense as it has gone in nearly a complete 180 versus a traditional Don Bosco team. The running dynamic of quarterback Wes McKoy is an explosive dimension but through the first four weeks of the season he has completed just 10 passes.
9 (9) | St. John Bosco Bellflower (CA) | 5-1 | def. No. 12 Mater Dei, 28-25
The Braves were opportunistic on defense and turned three fumbles and a missed Mater Dei field goal into a victory. Quarterback Josh Rosen ended the game limping down the field after dealing with a minor injury that happened in the third quarter. The Trinity League opened with three, one-score games and it could be a test to finish the season with a lone loss to Bishop Gorman.
10 (8) | Booker T. Washington Miami (FL) | 7-0 | def. Miami Northwestern, 27-12
The Tornadoes came out of the bye a little rusty in a heated rivalry game versus a slowly improving Northwestern team. BTW was able to earn the victory but it was jumped by Paramus Catholic and St. John Bosco which both have a markedly better strength of schedule and what appears to be better teams on the field.
11 (15) | Mainland Daytona Beach (FL) | 7-0 | def. Oviedo, 41-7
We are dangerously close to believing the Mainland is the best team in Florida. It destroyed a quality Oviedo team which added its second nationally relevant win over the season to the resume. The team will have to get through Miami Central as well as Armwood to win a state title and if it can complete that run it will end in the Top 10 nationally.
12 (10) | Mater Dei Santa Ana (CA) | 5-1 | lost to No. 9 St. John Bosco, 28-25
Mater Dei played well enough to win the game on Friday but made several costly mistakes that cost it a victory. Missing a field goal that it usually connects on and losing a fumble that was returned nearly 70 yards for a touchdown were two major point swings in the game. The team also had a third costly fumble late in the game that halted a drive. Had Mater Dei played a clean game the HSFB100 would be very different right now.
13 (11) | Miami Central (Florida) | 6-1 | def. Norland, 35-0
The Rockets checked the box in this game as Norland is not the major win that it would have been three seasons ago. The Rockets — like so many in Florida are biding their time and staying healthy for the playoffs. Florida has a major issue with distrciting and too many classes — which should be on the front burner of the associations list but has barely been discussed.
14 (12) | Folsom (California) | 7-0 | def. Nevada Union, 63-6
Folsom is the clear No. 2 team in NorCal this year and there is always the rumble that this would be the season that it defeated De La Salle. The Bulldogs are all but locked into the Division I Bowl game which may still not provide a major test to prove its mettle this season.
15 (15) | Bingham South Jordan (UT) | 7-1 | def. Jordan, 58-41
Bingham had to play defense against Jordan quarterback Austin Kafentzis and he was able to lead the team to scoring in bunches. The Miners still came out with a three-score win and the top spot in the state.
16 (25) | Clay-Chalkville Pinson (AL) | 7-0 | def. Shades Valley, 59-24
STOCK UP: Clay-Chalkville outscored Shades Valley 31-7 in the second half to make a jump inside the Top 25 and put some breathing room between itself and Hoover for the top spot in Alabama. The Cougars appear to be the best team in the state right now but will need to stay focused as the Class 6A playoffs will be difficult and nothing is won in mid-October.
17 (14) | St. Thomas Aquinas Ft. Lauderdale (FL) | 5-1 | def. Northeast, 63-0
The Raiders continue to blank district foes and other inferior competition as it closes out the regular season. It buoyed backwards this week being jumped by Paramus Catholic, Mainland, and Clay-Chalkville. The Raiders are among the most talented teams in the country but with the remaining schedule and a Class 7A playoff path that doesn’t look as strong as past year it may be tough to finish inside the Top 15. The lasting image is still of its sub-par performance against Don Bosco.
18 (24) | Starkville (Mississippi) | 7-0 | def. Greenville, 38-0
Mirroring the college football landscape, Starkville is the top spot for high school football in the state of Mississippi. The team is rolling right now but will face a test this coming week versus Madison Central.
19 (16) | Buford (Georgia) | 6-0 | def. North Hall, 56-0
Rinse and repeat: There are only so many ways to write that the best of the Buford schedule is in the rearview mirror. The playoffs shold provide a few more proving ground games for the Wolves.
20 (23) | Rummel Metarie (LA) | 6-0 | def. Archbishop Shaw, 56-14
Rummel got to exhale a little after opening its season with a string of really tough games. It will have to be ready to buckle the chin strap again on Saturday when it plays a St. Augustine team that has already knocked off John Curtis this season.
21 (22) | Flanagan Pembroke Pines (FL) | 6-0 | def. Cooper City, 42-2
Flanagan just keeps staying on the pace within the state and its defense continues to suffocate opponents. The showdown with Miramar will provide a better test as its curent schedule has been against teams with combined record of 14-32.
22 (27) | Chandler (Arizona) | 6-1 | def. Gilbert, 56-14
With the freefall of Mountain Pointe it was tough to make this move but the Wolves have always felt like the best team in the state by a sizable margin. The playoffs will determine if this was the right move to make.
23 (19) | Dallas Skyline (Texas) | 6-0 | def. Nimitz, 56-0
Skyline continues to put up points in bunches as it blanked another district foe. The Raiders still have the win over Cedar Hill in its pocket but there is little else on the resume prior to the playoffs.
24 (21) | Cedar Hill (Texas) | 5-1 | def. Duncanville, 45-31
Cedar Hill beat Duncanville this week and stayed mostly healthy. The team is still looking at DeSoto in two weeks and then the playoff march. As are we.
25 (29) | St. Peter’s Prep Jersey City (NJ) | 4-1 | def. Ferris, 63-6
St. Peter’s was back in action in this week and downed Ferris with ease. The gap between the top three teams in New Jersey and the next three is pretty sizable. It is something that fans are probably fine with as the Th as the top three are inside the Top 25 nationally.
26 (30) | Centennial Corona (CA) | 4-2 | def. King, 41-9
27 (18) | Bellevue (Washington) | 6-0 | def. Juanita, 38-6
28 (44) | Carmel (Indiana) | 8-0 | def. No. 71 Warren Central, 17-10
29 (35) | Hoover (Alabama) | 5-2 | def. Tuscaloosa County, 66-27
30 (36) | American Heritage Plantation (FL) | 4-2 | def. Boles, 35-21
31 (39) | Southlake Carroll (Texas) | 6-0 | def. Richland, 38-0
32 (40) | Union Tulsa (OK) | 5-1 | def. Southmoore, 51-21
33 (41) | Grayson Loganville (GA) | 7-0 | def. Shiloh, 42-6
34 (66) | Euless Trinity (Texas) | 7-0 | def. Bell, 48-3
35 (31) | Punahou Honolulu (HI) | 6-0 | def. Kamehameham 47-7
36 (33) | Dutch Fork Irmo (SC) | 5-2 | def. Ridge View, 41-7
37 (34) | Byrnes Duncan (SC) | 6-1 | def. Riverside, 49-14
38 (42) | Servite Anaheim (CA) | 4-2 | def. No. 76 Orange Lutheran, 31-25
39 (37) | Destrehan (Louisiana) | 6-0 | def. Thibodaux, 21-14
40 (43) | Blackman Murfreesboro (TN) | 7-0 | Idle
41 (58) | Oceanside (California) | 6-0 | def. Mission Hills, 42-16
42 (45) | Oakland Murfreesboro (TN) | 6-1 | def. Baylor, 17-10
43 (46) | Byrd Shreveport (LA) | 6-0 | def. Airline, 31-13
44 (48) | South Panola Batesville (MS) | 7-0 | def. Hernando, 52-3
STOCK UP: It is an otherwise unremarkable four-spot move but South Panola is finally looking like a team that was a powerhouse in Mississippi and the nation. The playoffs in the Magnolia State should be tremendous with a lot of teams playing really well.
45 (47) | Maryville (Tennessee) | 7-0 | def. Lenoir City, 45-6

94 (26) | Mountain Pointe Phoenix (AZ) | 6-2 | lost to Brophy, 31-28
STOCK DOWN: Running back Paul Lucas was on the field — though noticabely limited — but the defense was what failed The Pride. It is hard to believe this team is not still a threat for a state title.
95 (32) | Dorman Roebuck (SC) | 7-1 | lost to Spartanburg, 35-28
STOCK DOWN: The Dorman defense let it down in a game with a previously-ranked Spartanburg squad. We are not sure what to make of the loss as Dorman has multiple quality wins and finding the outlier isn’t easy. A game with Byrnes on Halloween will be a great game prior to the playoffs.
