California slides back in HSFB100 update

Three of the top four in California — and almost every ranked-team from the state — slid backwards this week as close contests brought the pack back together.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) dropped from No. 9 to No. 15 as it avoided an upset bid by JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, CA).

Folsom (CA) drifted back to No. 16 from No. 14 while idle. There was consideration for jumping the Bulldogs ahead of the top SoCal teams but that did not happen.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) also fell five spots as it was dropped from No. 12 to No. 17 as it avoided consecutive losses by rallying to defeat Servite (Anaheim, CA).

The other two teams in the California Top 5 maintained their respective spots as De La Salle (Concord, CA) stayed at No. 2 and Centennial (Corona, CA) remained just outside the Top 25, being placed at No. 26.

JSerra moved up from No. 54 to No. 39 due to its close contest with St. John Bosco while Servite moved backwards two places to No. 40 after another difficult defeat.

Just behind the Trinity League duo is Oceanside (CA) and Poly (Long Beach, CA) as Oceanside was sluggish in its win versus Torrey Pines (CA) while Poly checked the box against Lakewood (CA). Oceanside dropped from No. 41 to No. 50 and Poly went to No. 52 from No. 50.

Grant (Sacramento, CA) was a moderate upward mover going from No. 68 to No. 61.

The final two teams in the Trinity League check in just ahead of the entire Mission League with Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and Lutheran (Range, CA) are in at No. 95 and No. 96, respectively, after they played to a 42-41 final.

The rest of HSFB100 was relatively stable as most teams from last week held serve and met expectations.

RK (L) TEAM CITY (ST) RECORD LAST WEEK
1 (1) Bishop Gorman Las Vegas (NV) 9-0 def. Legacy, 70-13
Bishop Gorman dominated another Nevada opponent to the tune of 70-13. It was the first points allowed by the Gaels since it moved back to in-state play. The grip on the top spot in the HSFB100 is loose at best and there are a handful of teams still very active in chasing the National Championship.
2 (2) De La Salle Concord (CA) 7-0 Idle
The Spartans were idle this week but it is having its strength of schedule continually boosted as Serra (San Mateo, CA), Jesuit (Carmichael, CA), and Byrnes (Duncan, SC) continue to play well. It will take on Foothill (Pleasanton, CA) next week which is inside the Top 25 state rankings.
3 (3) Colquitt County Moultrie (GA) 8-0 def. Valdosta, 48-20
Colquitt County is on a different level compared to the other teams in Georgia and it showed that in defeating previously-ranked Valdosta (GA). There is always the concern that the Packers will bump their head in a game they should win but that has yet to happen. A run to a state championship will lock the team in for a Top 5 finish and depending on its path could push it for a National Title.
4 (4) Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) 6-0 Idle
The Paladins were idle this week and took the time to get healthy as the playoffs are approaching. The quiet week in New Jersey was a welcomed change from the last two weeks of controversy.
5 (5) Allen (Texas) 7-0 Idle
Three of the top five teams this week were idle and as a result very little movement occurred. The top spot in Texas is as loose of a placement as the top spot in the HSFB100. Allen could just as easily be ranked No. 3 in the state as it is to be No. 5 in the nation.
6 (6) DeSoto (Texas) 7-0 def. South Grand Prairie, 41-10
The biggest news to come out of this week for DeSoto was the loss of Duncanville. The Eagles need either Midlothian or Mansfield to finish the season as the No. 4 team in the district to make sure that it goes to the Division I path with a potential showdown against Allen. Beating South Grand Prairie was expected and the team stayed focused on defense — which is something to monitor.
7 (7) Manvel (Texas) 7-0 def. Alvin, 52-7
Manvel remained No. 3 in the state and inside the Top 10. It could push to No. 2 in the state prior to the playoffs but its path will likely include a game with Katy and a defense that is among the best in Texas.
8 (8) Don Bosco Ramsey (NJ) 4-1 def. Passiac Tech, 38-0
The Ironmen checked a box in beating a previously unbeaten Passaic Tech team. The team has shown chinks in the armor even in victories. It is not assured of a Top 10 finish even with the potential to win out on the season.
9 (10) Booker T. Washington Miami (FL) 8-0 def. Gulliver Prep, 42-8
It was an easy victory over Gulliver Prep this week as Booker T. Washington continues to say atop the state rankings. The next challenge for the Tornadoes will be in about a month when it will play Cocoa (FL) in the playoffs. The debate for the best team in Florida is as interesting as the top team in Texas.
10 (13) Miami Central (Florida) 7-1 def. Northwestern, 56-21
The Rockets continue to improve and have started two debates: is this the best one-loss team in the country and is this the best team in Florida? The standings would say that Booker T. Washington belongs on the first line but there is a low rumble that Miami Central looks the part right now.
11 (11) Mainland Daytona Beach (FL) 8-0 def. New Smyrna Beach, 43-0
Mainland is like the Manvel of the Florida’s top team debate. It has the talent of the teams ahead of it and a quality win or two to fall back on but it doesn’t have the recent history of Booker T. Washington or Miami Central. This team may be the best in Florida but it will take proving it against a blueblood for everyone to buy in.
12 (16) Clay-Chalkville Pinson (AL) 8-0 def. Woodlawn, 42-8
Clay-Chalkville was able to avoid a letdown game and rolled to an easy win over Woodlawn. The Class 6A playoffs will be a test for the Cougars to maintain the Top 15 placement.
13 (18) Starkville (Mississippi) 7-0 def. Madison Central, 28-0
STOCK UP: It was a bold statement to claim a goal of shutting out your entire district but Starkville is two-thirds of teh way there as it has blanked its last four opponents. The Mississippi playoffs may be more difficult this season than the last four years and it makes this team a sleeper for a National Title.
14 (20) Rummel Metarie (LA) 8-0 def. St. Augustine, 35-6
STOCK UP: Rummel is another sleeper for a national title. The strength of schedule continues to improve and will get better over the next three regular season contests. The chance to run through the Select Division I playoff path may be enough to push the Raiders ahead of some perennial powers. Beating St. Augustine the way it did was not unnoticed.
15 (9) St. John Bosco Bellflower (CA) 6-1 def. No. 39 JSerra, 49-44
It is hard to penalize St. John Bosco after defeating a ranked opponent but it is clear that this team is not as elite as it was last year and the preseason hype has yet to be met by on-field performance. Losing offensive lineman and its entire defense — 10 of 11 starters — just has caused more issues than expected. If Jason Negro can win a state title this season it will be a more impressive coaching job than he did in 2013.
16 (14) Folsom (California) 7-0 IDle
Folsom is the clear No. 2 team in NorCal this year and there is always the rumble that this would be the season that it defeated De La Salle. The Bulldogs are all but locked into the Division I Bowl game which may still not provide a major test to prove its mettle this season.
17 (12) Mater Dei Santa Ana (CA) 6-1 def. No. 40 Servite, 29-17
The Monarchs made a late rally to win a really entertaining football game against Servite. The Trinity League is the best league in the country right now with a lot of teams playing at a very high level. If Mater Dei gets another shot at St. John Bsco it may be able to knock the team off.
18 (15) Bingham South Jordan (UT) 8-1 def. Copper Hills, 63-6
The Miners are the top team in the state by a wide margin. Bingham has rarely been tested since its games with Bishop Gorman and Brighton within the state. It may have its most talented team in the last five years and should finish inside the Top 25.
19 (17) St. Thomas Aquinas Ft. Lauderdale (FL) 6-1 def. Cypress Bay, 34-7
The Raiders continue to beat district foes and other inferior competition as it closes out the regular season. It buoyed backwards this week being jumped by Starkville and Rummel. The Raiders are among the most talented teams in the country but with the remaining schedule and a Class 7A playoff path that doesn’t look as strong as past year it may be tough to finish inside the Top 15. The lasting image is still of its sub-par performance against Don Bosco.
20 (19) Buford (Georgia) 7-0 def. Monroe, 51-12
Rinse and repeat: There are only so many ways to write that the best of the Buford schedule is in the rearview mirror. The playoffs shold provide a few more proving ground games for the Wolves.
21 (21) Flanagan Pembroke Pines (FL) 7-0 def. No. 74 Miramar, 27-21
Flanagan justified its placement with its first district title and only its second-ever win over Miramar. The Falcons needed to score the final 21 points to win after giving Miramar 14 of its 21 in a span of five game minutes.
22 (22 Chandler (Arizona) 7-1 def. Perry, 56-21
Chandler remained the top team in the state or Arizona and kept its No. 22 placement in the HSFB100 after recording another decisive victory. Like many states the top of the Arizona playoffs will sort the teams properly but this group looks like the class of the state.
23 (23) Dallas Skyline (Texas) 7-0 def. White, 42-0
Skyline continues to put up points in bunches as it blanked another district foe. The Raiders have beat bad teams 98-0 the last two weeks.
24 (24) Cedar Hill (Texas) 6-1 def. Grand Prairie, 42-7
Cedar Hill kept Grand Prairie winless within the distrcit with an easy, five-score victory. The district will be decided this week against DeSoto.
25 (25) St. Peter’s Prep Jersey City (NJ) 5-1 def. Bayonne, 49-0
St. Peter’s put a running clock victory on Bayonne as it moves through an easy Hudson County schedule. A playoff path with Paramus Catholic and Don Bosco is still a possibility.
26 (26) Centennial Corona (CA) 5-2 def. Roosevelt, 46-10
27 (27) Bellevue (Washington) 7-0 def. Liberty, 37-0
28 (29) Hoover (Alabama) 6-2 def. Vestavia Hills, 42-0
29 (30) American Heritage Plantation (FL) 5-2 def. Apopka, 30-20
30 (31) Southlake Carroll (Texas) 7-0 def. No. 35 Euless Trinity, 10-6
31 (32) Union Tulsa (OK) 6-1 def. No. 100 Owasso, 37-13
32 (33) Grayson Loganville (GA) 8-0 def. Central Gwinnett, 28-0
33 (44) South Panola Batesville (MS) 8-0 def. Tupelo, 27-10
34 (46) Mentor (Ohio) 8-0 def. Solon, 42-16
35 (34) Euless Trinity (Texas) 7-1 lost to No. 30 Southlake Carroll, 10-6
36 (43) Byrd Shreveport (LA) 7-0 def. Cptain Shreve, 48-7
37 (36) Dutch Fork Irmo (SC) 6-2 def. Blythewood, 55-14
38 (37) Byrnes Duncan (SC) 7-1 def. Mann, 69-7
39 (54) JSerra San Juan Capistrano (CA) 6-1 lost to No. 15 St. John Bosco, 49-44
40 (38) Servite Anaheim (CA) 4-3 lost to No. 17 Mater Dei, 20-17
41 (39) Destrehan (Louisiana) 7-0 def. Central Lafourche, 42-7
42 (40) Blackman Murfreesboro (TN) 8-0 def. Smyrna, 42-10
43 (47) Wayne Huber Heights (OH) 8-0 def. Northmont, 49-19
44 (28) Carmel (Indiana) 9-0 def. Lawrence Cetntal, 27-20
45 (35) Punahou Honolulu (HI) 6-0 Idle
46 (42) Oakland Murfreesboro (TN) 7-1 def. LaVergne, 47-0
47 (45) Maryville (Tennessee) 8-0 def. William Blount, 38-0
48 (58) IMG Academy Bradenton (FL)) 8-1 def. Trinity Christian, 28-7
49 (49) Katy (Texas) 6-1 def. Morton Ranch, 52-0
50 (49) Oceanside (California) 7-0 def. Torrey Pines, 42-21
51 (48) Steele Cibolo (TX) 7-1 def. New Braunfels, 45-10
52 (50) Long Beach Poly (California) 7-1 def. Lakewood, 55-7
53 (89) St. Ignatius Cleveland (OH) 6-2 def. No. 63 Moeller, 34-20
STOCK UP: St. Iggy has won several impressive contests after giving away a victory against Paramus Catholic. This team is a threat to win a state title and has to be kicking itself as it could have dramatically changed the national landscape.
54 (73) Brentwood Academy Brentwood (TN) 8-1 def. Baylor, 38-31
55 (75) St. Xavier Cincinnati (OH) 6-2 def. No. 66 Warren Central, 23-14
56 (53) Niceville Niceville (FL) 7-1 def. Fort Walton Beach, 38-6
57 (NR) Martin Arlington (TX) 5-2 def. Bowie, 33-21

71 (64) Armwood Seffner (FL) 7-0 def. Lennard, 56-0
72 (55) Male Louisville (KY) 8-0 def. Louisville Trinity, 35-34
73 (NR) American Heritage Delray BEach (FL) 5-1 Idle
STOCK UP: This placement could have waited until after the showdown game next week but the team has a strong enough resume to make a move into the HSFB100. It was bolstered by Central-Phenix City moving to the No. 3 spot in Alabama.
74 (59) Miramar (Florida) 4-3 lost to No. 21 Flanagan, 27-21
STOCK DOWN: Miramar has failed to hold leads versus St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage, and Flanagan. The offense is inconsistent and the team looks like it lost the swagger it has had the last few seasons.
