Georgia Region 1-6A shuffles the deck on four nationally relevant teams

Georgia Region 1-6A has emerged as one of the best collections of teams in the nation and the jockeying for playoff position was given a shuffle Friday night.

Colquitt County (Moultrie, GA) flexed its muscle with a 58-14 victory over Lee Country (Leesburg, GA) to maintain its spot atop the group. It is currently ranked as the No. 7 team in the HSFB100 and projects as the top team in the state at the midpoint of the season.

Colquitt has run to the front of the pack in Region 1-6A.

Colquitt has run to the front of the pack in Region 1-6A.

Just behind the Packers is Valdosta (GA), Lowndes (Valdosta, GA), and Camden County (Kingsland, GA) — all of which have been nationally ranked this season.

Colquitt County has already secured a victory over Lowndes — as well as Hoover (AL) and Mill Creek (Hoschton, GA).

Valdosta entered the weekend ranked No. 74 in the HSFB100 and the second-place team in the region. It narrowly downed Tift County (Tift, GA) last night to set up a showdown with Colquitt County next weekend.

Valdosta has already defeated Camden Country to go with quality wins against Brookwood (Snellville, GA) and Thomas County Central (Thomasville, GA).

With both Colquitt and Valdosta being 7-0 — as well as 2-0 within the region — the two are assured of a spot in the HSFB100 come Monday.

Lowndes and Camden each have regional losses and the the contest between the two was an important one with Lowndes coming away with a victory over Camden County on Friday night, 27-21.

The Vikings had fallen from the HSFB100 last week after it lost to Colquitt while Camden also had slid down the list to No. 75 from No. 34 after being defeated by Valdosta.

The result knotted up the series at 3-3 over the last decade between the two teams.

It also may be enough to place all four in the HSFB100.

Camden County is now sits at 0-2 in the region but 5-2 overall with its best win of the year being over Lincoln (Tallahasse, FL). The loss marks the first time in the last decade that the Wildcats have dropped back-to-back games and if it doesn’t go on to win-out then it will also be the first time in the last decade that the team has suffered three losses in the same season.

The game was a close contest as are most in the region.

Lowndes jumped out to a 21-6 lead at halftime and then used an interception on the final drive to seal the contest and give itself a window of opportunity to move back into the national rankings.

Camden had a chance to win the game as it needed to go just 38 yards in the final 1:52 but the drive was quickly thwarted as Alex Brown intercepted a pass from Antonio Hamilton at the Lowndes’ 15 to end the contest and propel the team to victory.

The victory over Camden County adds to a quality win over Plant (Tampa, FL) for Lowndes which still has The Winnersville Classic game with Valdosta on Halloween to make its case for a better seed in the playoffs.

Unless one of the teams stumble against Tift or Lee County all four will make the Class AAAAAA playoffs in Georgia where the path could lead any to a state title.

The rankings this week will mirror the standings with Colquitt, Valdosta, Lowndes, and then Camden County.
