Playoff blowouts make for minor shuffles in Media Top 25

For the second week in a row the teams deemed elite by the national media held serve as there was not single turnover from the Media Compilation Top 25.

The movement inside the poll was based on poor performances as two teams lost polls and fell from their previous spots while two teams that suffered major injuries remained in their places.

Southlake Carroll (Texas) lost 11 cumulative votes and was jumped by two teams that were idle while Punahou (Honolulu, HI) fell five spots in the Compilation after it fell out of another poll as its has not performed well the last few contests.

View Past Polls:

The six major polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.

The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each Tuesday of the season.

Southlake Carroll had been one of the fastest rising teams in the Media Compilation going from unranked and barely receiving votes just a month ago to inching towards the Top 15.

It nearly was knocked out of the playoffs this week before rallying against Mansfield to win, 38-31.

It was the fifth time this season that Southlake Carroll has fought back for a victory.

The Dragons managed to comeback to defeat Euless Trinity three weeks ago, 10-6, which also propelled it into several polls.

The last Texas team to win a national championship in 2006 opened its season trailing Westlake (Austin, TX) before holding off a final drive to win, 17-14. The next week it used a direct snap, jet sweep, pass-to-the-quarterback to beat Union (Tulsa, OK) in overtime, 42-41. Then it needed a 10-play, 77-yard drive in the final three minutes to score a winning touchdown versus Coppell (TX) in a 28-24 victory.

Punahou came out of a three week layoff and nearly lost to Kahuku, 13-10.

The last time the Buff ‘N Blue was on the field it barely beat a St. Louis program by one score, 35-28, that is had opened the year against with a crushing 55-7 result.

The overall evaluations of Hawaii football have been down this season and the top team finishing play with a whimper dropped it from No. 15 to No. 19 this week with one game to play in its season.

Two teams that will have a watchful eye placed on them will be Bingham (South Jordan, UT) and Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, AL). Neither lost a place in the poll this week — Bingham actually jumped Miami Central (FL) — but both sustained major injuries.

Bingham will be without quarterback Kyle Gearig for the state finals as he hurt his elbow in the semifinals victory.

Clay-Chalkville must replace its all-time leading rusher, Terelle West, after he tore his ACL and lateral meniscus in a win over Muscle Shoals.

RK (L) POINTS TEAM HSFB100 USAT Max PN Scout CPU
1 (1) 240 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) 1 1 1 1 1 1
The Gaels maintain the top spot in the Media Compilation Top 25 as it dominated another Nevada opponent. It has the honorary Trinity League Title as well with it beating three of the leagues five playoff teams and could be a defacto California and Utah state champion depending on how the season plays out. There is a theory that some polls have already booked the national title for the Gaels as the team will not lose in Nevada while some others are waiting on how the season plays out for other states.
2 (2) 226 De La Salle (Concord, CA) 2 3 2 2 3 8
De La Salle was a bye this week but figures to extend its 257-game unbeaten streak against NorCal teams this coming week and could run that to 260 games before the Open Division Bowl game. The Spartans will be without its starting quarterback for the rest of the season but it may not matter with the offense run by the team. It lost a single point this week as the Computer moved Allen (Texas) ahead of the Spartans.
3 (3) 224 Allen (Texas) 4 2 3 4 2 7
Allen gained back the two spots it lost last week in the Computer rankings as well as won its first-round playoff game with ease against Keller Central. One of the most difficult test for the Eagles potential three-peat in Texas will come this week against a Desoto team that is receiving votes in the Compilation poll.
4 (4) 213 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) 5 9 6 6 5 2
St. John Bosco got a week of rest after a grueling stretch of games through the Trinity League. It dominated an overmatched Cabrillo team this week to open the Pac-5 playoffs, 50-0. The Braves were unchanged across all six polls as the game was checking the box.
5 (5) 185 Folsom (California) 9 15 5 14 8 10
Folsom was unchanged in five polls but lost six places in the Computer rankings after dominating Stagg, 70-14. It was 42-0 at the end of the first quarter and the Bulldogs got to work in its JV group in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin playoffs.
6 (6) 180 Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) 8 4 4 5 4
Booker T. Washington is still being viewed as the ultimate buoy in the polls and this week was another unchanged week for the Tornadoes. It bettered a Somerset Academy team to open the Class 4A playoffs, 70-0. The 2013 National Champions will get a name game against Glades Central this week that may get it some movement although it will likely be dependent on the semifinals and finals if it is to move up..
7 (8) 176 Colquitt Co. (Moultrie, GA) 3 5 7 3 11
Colquitt went up two in the MaxPreps rankings but down one on the Computer after opening the Georgia Class 6A playoffs with a dominating win. The Packers path may actually not be as difficult as projected earlier in the season and it could hurt the team in the longrun. Colquitt still is on the outside of the Scout poll but is within striking distance at No. 27 and with a state title and other attrition the team figures safe for a Top 5 finish.
8 (8) 153 Bellevue (Washington) 16 6 9 7 14
Bellevue is another buoy program as the in-state opponents are not that impressive. The Wolverines did not get any favors in the strength of schedule category as its best win over Gardena Serra (CA) was bounced in the first round of the Pac-5 playoffs. The Wolverines was a nominal mover this week as its went up one in the HSFB100 and Scout poll but down one at MaxPreps.
9 (9) 150 Starkville (Mississippi) 17 14 10 11 3
Starkville moved into the Top 3 of the Computer rankings as it shutout Tupelos in Class 6A opening round action, 30-0. The two spots in that poll plus one each at the HSFB100 and MaxPreps netted four points and kept the Yellow Jackets inside the Top 10.
10 (11) 149 Bingham (South Jordan, UT) 11 8 16 9 12
Bingham won its semifinals game but lost its starting quarterback in the second quarter. Three polls left the Miners in their spot from last week while MaxPreps dropped the team four spots and the Computer boosted it six. A state finals with American Fork will be an interesting contest as the quarterback situation favors the underdog while the rest of the talent advantage is in favor of the Miners.
11 (10) 146 Miami Central (Miami, FL) 13 7 15 12 12
Miami Central followed the suit of many teams in the Media Compilation Top 25 as the team buoyed with a meaningless win in the opening round of the playoffs. The lone spot it gained was in the Scout poll which slid teams up to backfill the spot vacated by Louisville Male falling in the Kentucky playoffs.
12 (12) 142 Skyline (Dallas, TX) 10 18 8 16 11
Skyline remained outside of the Computer rankings this week as its first round playoff game went much the same as other elite teams — it blew out Lake Highlands, 41-14. The Raiders could make the state semifinals in Texas without playing a nationally relevant team. It moved up three places in the USAToday poll and one at Scout but was jumped in the MaxPreps ranking.
13 (13) 124 Buford (Georgia) 11 13 10 6
Buford was unchanged across the four polls that have the Wolves ranked. The figures to be the same next week as it is expected to hammer Mary Parsons in the Class 4A playoffs. It will be tested in the quarterfinals with the winner of Marist and Griffin as well as the semi and finals as the third-largest class in Georgia does have nationally relevant teams. An undefeated season should give it rankings across all six polls and a boost in total points.
14 (14) 123 Manvel (Texas) 6 11 8 16
Manvel maintained all four polls this week as it beat West Brook to open the Texas 6ADII playoffs. It moved down a spot at MaxPreps and up one in Scout to keep the same point total from last week. If Media Compilation Top 25 seeding holds then Manvel will go through Katy, Cibolo Steele, and Southlake Carroll to win a state title. It would likely finish in the Top 5 of multiple polls with that path.
15 (17) 112 Rummel (Metarie, LA) 7 10 18 17
Rummel was on a bye this week as the Louisiana Select Division I playoffs got underway. The Raiders did not change placements in any of the four polls that it was ranked but jumped over two teams in the poll as performances for those in action were deemed not worthy of their placements.
16 (18) 101 Paramus Catholic (Paramus, NJ) 22 14 22 5
Paramus Catholic was also idle this week but jumped two programs that did not perform as expected. The Paladins gained two spots in the HSFB100 — moving ahead of Southlake Carroll and Euless Trinity — and it fell two in the Computer rankings as idle weeks tend to have that result.
17 (16) 101 Southlake Carroll (Texas) 22 20 20 19 24
Southlake Carroll was an interesting case this week as it saw movement in five of the six polls — remaining No. 20 at PrepNation. It made a furious comeback to defeat Mansfield in the opening round of the Texas 6ADII playoffs, 38-31. The team trailed 31-17 entering the fourth quarter and scored the game winning pass with 13 seconds to play. It was the fifth such escape for the Dragons this year. Southlake Carroll was bounced from the HSFB100 and fell three spots in the USAToday and one at MaxPreps. It gained one on Scout and moved into the Computer rankings at No. 24. It was a net loss of 11 points but only cost the team one slot in the compilation.
18 (20) 94 JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, CA) 14 20 22 14
JSerra cruised to an opening round win in the Pac-5 playoffs as it enjoyed the spoils of a No. 2 seed. It moved up two spots within the USAToday and at MaxPreps with an additional bump of one spot in the HSFB100. It fell six spots in the Computer ranking as the strength of schedule hit came from playing an inferior team.
19 (15) 92 Punahou (Honolulu, HI) 25 19 9 15
Punahou returned to action this week and fought hard for a 13-10 victory against Kahuku. It was the second uninspiring contest in a row for the Buff ‘N Blue and the polls are starting to take notice. The Computer dropped the team five places while the USAToday slid is back three. MaxPreps joined the HSFB100 as two polls that do not view the top team in Hawaii among the best 25 teams in the nation.
19 (19) 91 Carmel (Indiana) 24 23 25 22 20
Carmel escaped its semifinals contest against Penn with a 14-13 victory. The Greyhounds needed a missed field goal and extra point to avoid being upset. The result pushed the team down five places in the Computer rankings, four at USAToday and one in MaxPreps rankings. It moved up two at Scout.
20 (23) 88 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 24 21 24 7
St. Thomas Aquinas crushed its opening round opponent, Mater Academy, 57-0, and has shutout six of its last eight opponents only allowing 14 points since Sept. 26. It gained a bottom rung back into the HSFB100 moving up from No. 26 to No. 24 and gaining 17 points over last week.
21 (21) 84 Mainland (Daytona Beach, FL) 12 12 15
Mainland blasted South Lake in its opening round playoff game, 42-7. The team is starting to get healthy and if seeding holds it will gain strength of schedule points with games against Winter Haven, Miami Central, and then Armwood. It was unchanged in the three polls this week.
23 (23) 73 Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, AL) 18 19 13
The Cougars got back on track defensively being able to stifle a difficult-to-defend Muscle Shoals program. It gained two total points sliding up at the HSFB100 and MaxPreps but the team lost its starting running back and all-time leading rusher in Terelle West. It could cost the team at least one poll in the coming weeks.
24 (25) 71 St. Edward Lakewood (OH) 25 21 6
The Eagles won its second round playoff game and figures to move into the state semifinals with a win this week. It gained the last spot in the HSFB100 this week as it appears to be a team rounding back into the form that it had when it was No. 1 in the Media Compilation rankings. It was unchanged in the other two polls that have the team ranked..
25 (24) 69 St. Peter’s Prep Jersey City (NJ) 19 18 17
St. Peter’s crushed Seton Hall Prep in the first round of the playoffs in New Jersey, 46-7. The result was as expected and the movement in the three ranking polls was nominal. The HSFB100 moved the team up three spots while Scout bumped it one.
