A week after Miami Central and Miami Booker T. Washington represented Dada County and stole the headlines with televised victories over Hoover (AL) as well as Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA), respectively, the focus turns to a pair of programs that are battling for the top spot in the HSFB100 in the National Game of the Week.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) already sits atop the rankings while American Heritage (Plantation, FL) closed the gap from its preseason placement at No. 10 to No. 7 after an impressive ‘win’ against Dwyer (West Palm Beach, FL) in its Kickoff Classic game on ESPN.

Raider coach Rocco Cassulo was not thrilled with his team being ranked No. 1 in the nation when it hadn’t proved to be the top team in a 10-mile radius.

“We may not be the best team in Broward County,” he said. “If we can get through September then we will talk about that.

“This is a game we are excited about playing against a quality team like American Heritage. It is great for Broward County and both programs.”

The two campus’ are literally separated by four turns and 7 miles of I-595 but both will travel a half hour down the Florida turnpike to play at Sun Life Stadium as part of the Miami Dolphins High School Series on Friday at 7:30pm.

Where they are even closer is in talent as both rosters boast double digit players that will participate in college.

For St. Thomas Aquinas it will start up front on the offensive line.

The Raiders return four starters — including a pair of Syracuse commits in Colin Byrne and Samuel Clausman.

Behind them will be four-star running back and Miami commitment Jordan Scarlett — who transferred from University School (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) — to add to three-star Maryland commit, Deltron Sands, and junior Devontae Henry-Cole in the backfield.

Class of 2016 receiver Sam Bruce — also committed to Miami and also a University School tranfer — will join four-star Devante Peete as well as Florida Atlantic pledge Jawaun Harris and Trevon Grime as a quartet of talented playmakers on the outside.

Jake Rizzo will be charged with distributing the football and managing the game.

Rizzo played in six games last year as the backup to Vanderbilt signee, Wade Freebeck, completed 11-of-28 passes for 209, with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He was 7-of-11 for 47 yards in the teams kickoff classic last week against Dillard (Ft. Lauderdale, FL).

Casullo said that Rizzo will remind many of Ryan Becker — who led the Raiders to a 2008 National Championship.

“He is just like Ryan,” Casullo said. “They have similar skill sets and their size and mentality are nearly identical. Ryan knew that he just needed to let the playmakers make plays and he won to state titles and a national championship. I think Jake knows that, too.”

Defensively the program has a strong front seven with Ohio State lean Nick Bosa, Duke pledge Brandon Boyce, Julian McCleod, Chris Hart, and Boston College-bound Wyatt Ray all returning.

The secondary features South Carolina commitment Damon Arnett, Tyson Cisrow as well as transfer Rashard Causey.

American Heritage will not look so bad getting off the bus either.

The Patriots return 10 starters from a team that won the Class 5A state title last season and added nearly that many in transfers.

It can also match the offensive line of St. Thomas Aquinas as it has four massive starters chomping at the bit to prove they should be getting the recruiting attention of their counterparts.

Torrance Gibson is No. 24 in the Top 247 rankings. View his profile.

Sophomore Tedarrell Slaton is the biggest of the group at 6-foot-5, 320-pounds but he is joined be Noah Bringas (6-4, 320), Brett Kahn (6-4, 270), and junior Louis Berkowitz (6-3, 285). None have a Division I offer.

They will be blocking for sophomore running back Kyshaun Bryan and senior, four-star quarterback Torrance Gibson.

With junior receivers Dredrick Snelson and Brandon Johnson on the outside the Patriots maintained their explosiveness from last season.

Bryan and Snelson are stepping out of the shadow left by a pair of standout players in Sony Michel and Isaiah McKenzie who are both now at Georgia.

Second year coach Mike Rumph told Steve Gorten (follow on twitter) of the SunSentinel that the players that are gone have fueled those still on the roster.

“There are a bunch of kids that have a chip on their shoulder because everybody only thinks about Sony and Isaiah,” Rumph said.

“Now the sky’s the limit for the guys. Once you have a big game on national TV for Game 1, there’s no telling how far you can go.”

Snelson showcased himself in the kickoff classic against Dwyer with three touchdowns as his chemistry with Gibson was apparent but his speed and strength were impressive.

Bryan added 145 yards on 17 carries in the game in his first start replacing Michel.

Defensively five-star defensive back Tarvarus McFadden and three-star Deonta Fair will lock up on the receivers of the Raiders.

The front seven was solid but not spectacular against Dwyer however facing talented competition in the exhibition game could better prepare the the group for St. Thomas Aquinas.

Whichever team emerges will have one major victory on the resume for a national title.

“That stuff is for you to decide but I think this is a group that has that it-factor,” Casullo said. “We have tremendous talent and if we can stay healthy and stay tight then it can work.

“Our schedule will test us and a lot of things can happen but we are looking forward to it.”

WHEN ST. THOMAS AQUINAS HAS THE BALL:
The Raiders have as much talent as any team in the country on the offensive side of the ball but in high school it often comes down to the quarterback and seeing how Rizzo handles the pressure of that spot will determine how the Raiders go in this one. In a limited capacity, Rizzo was efficient with the ball last season and theoretically he would have improved now as a senior. The good news is that even if he struggles to throw the ball early there are four returning offensive lineman blocking for three Division I running backs. If Cassullo needs to go to ground and pound, he can.
WHEN AMERICAN HERITAGE HAS THE BALL:
Heritage is explosive and has a mobile quarterback that can make plays with his legs. There will be a handful of points in the game where Gibson’s scrambling will be a turning point in a drive — either positively or negatively — but it is something that Aquinas doesn’t have and those instincts within the flow of the game are hard to account for. The Heritage offense will need to take a shot or two early to lift the lid on the defense and give it room to work underneath.
FINAL PREDICTION: (0-1 in 2014)
There is very little doubt that this game will be exciting to watch and will live up to the billing. St. Thomas Aquinas has an advantage in that the staff has ‘been there’ before and has won national titles and major showdown games. For American Heritage this is a relatively new things for them and there is potential that the first quarter could favor Aquinas as the Patriots settle in. The coaching chess match will be interesting to watch as Cassullo and the Raiders have been closer to the vest with their playcalling while Rumph brings a gambler style to the table. If played 10 times we think this could be a 5-5 series and which team wins this one will be the bounce of a ball. Taking the favorite may be the easy way out, Aquinas 31, American Heritage 26.

Weekend Watch: Spartans start the season with Jesuithttps://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/weekend-watch-spartans-start-the-season-with-jesuit/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/weekend-watch-spartans-start-the-season-with-jesuit/#comments Wed, 27 Aug 2014 15:50:15 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5807 After a good opening weekend Bob Ladouceur is hoping for a good opening weekend.

‘When the Game Stands Tall’ — a Hollywood adaptation of the book by the same name — chronicled the difficult 2004 season which included the aftermath of the 151-game winning streak at De La Salle (Concord, CA) was reported to have drawn $9.1-million during its premier run.

The real life Spartans enter the year at No. 8 in the HSFB100 and will look for similar success on the small screen against Jesuit (Carmichael, CA) as the two kickoff the season in Memorial Stadium on the Cal campus. The game will air at 11pmET on ESPN2.

Ladouceur stepped down as the head coach prior to the 2013 season but remained with the program as an assistant to former player Justin Alumbaugh.

He said that the change was difficult but he has settled in.

“After 34 years of being the head coach it was different,” he said. “You lose some of that responsibility and maybe even some of your own purpose but I did it long enough and I was satisfied with the job I did.

“Helping Justin presented some other rewarding opportunities and honestly running a program like this takes energy that I didn’t have anymore but Justin surely does.”

Ladouceur compiled a 399-25-3 record during his career at De La Salle. By comparison the program was 17-40-6 before his arrival.

He had 20 undefeated seasons, of which 12 were consecutive, and won a share of numerous national titles.

Jim Caviezel was tasked with portraying Ladouceur in the film and said that as he learned the role he was reminded a lot of his idol, John Wooden.

“I have always wanted to do a movie about Coach Wooden but that hasn’t materialized but to do this and get to know Coach Lad, he reminded me so much of Wooden,” Caviezel said. “He is about so much more than win’s and losses and what I love about Lad is that he is effecting people by being a positive influence. Lad comes from a place where he understands that he is a role model and that is important. I had good role models and I needed them, I think we all need them, and I think this is a film that can highlight that because it should effect people.”

It was a comparison that Ladoucuer initially deflected but also embraced.

“That is very high praise,” he said. “Coach Wooden is the greatest of all-time. When you think about it so much of his philosophy and beliefs are all common-sensical. He made it sound so wise and so revolutionary which was his gift. We try to operate in a similar manner.

“I am not comparing myself to John Wooden but we try to see things for what they are here and that is how we try to operate. That is a tremendous compliment.”

Adding to his legacy is his coaching tree where at least four of his assistants have gone on to have current success in NorCal.

Vic Galli is at Pittsburg High, Eric Billeci coaches at California High, Pat Walsh has lead a revival of the San Mateo Serra team, and Marlon Blanton, who will oppose the Spartans this week as the leader of Jesuit.

Many view Jesuit as a program that is on the right path but probably not an immediate threat to put an end to the 250-game NorCal winning streak that De La Salle maintains.

The Marauders are playing the game at the right time of the season as De La Salle has appeared most vulnerable early in the year.

This season De La Salle will be replacing four seniors that went to Division I programs as well as a handful of others lost to graduation.

Preseason All-American Khalil McKenzie has transferred to Clayton Valley Charter.

New quarterback Anthony Sweeney was injured in a scrimmage last week and his status is uncertain.

Lineman Boss Tagaloa is expected to be recovered from a broken ankle suffered in the spring but he could be limited.

The team does return running back Antoine Custer, two-way player Devin Asiasi, offensive lineman Drew Sullivan as well as co-captain Simba Short and Cameron Lissarrague.

It is expecting the return of receiver Adam Mayer to boost the passing game after he missed most of last season with a leg injury.

No matter the roster composition there are high expectations for De La Salle.

“When the streak was going each week we would read, ‘De La Salle will be attempting to win its 95th game in a row this Friday night,’ and afterwards is would be ‘De La Salle was able to win its 95th in a row’,” Ladouceur said. “It was always a reminder and always a precursor to everything we did.

“Now the streak is still referenced in most every story about us so it still lives and it holds the next group to the level of the groups before them.”

No. 8 De La Salle vs Jesuit
WHEN DE LA SALLE HAS THE BALL:
The health of Anthony Sweeney has not been updated and whether or not he can go will be a major turning point for the offense. The veer offense is run more effectively with a quarterback that understands the offense and then has the ability to run the ball. Sweeney — from all reports — was going to be an upgrade at the position and his absence will be missed. Jesuit will know what to expect from De La Salle but like everyone else in the last 35 years it will be tough to stop it.
WHEN JESUIT HAS THE BALL:
The defensive front of De La Salle may not be as strong as it had been expected to be with the loss of McKenzie and the injury to Tagaloa. If Jesuit can attack the teeth of the defense and soften up the edges it could have success. Many times NorCal teams allow the mystique of De La Salle to beat them before they get off the bus but Jesuit will not be that team. It will need a strong start though.
FINAL PREDICTION: De La Salle 20, Jesuit 6.
The score will make this game look closer than it is as De La Salle will control the contest but not be able to finish a few drives as early rust in the system is sure to slow the team down. Jesuit plays good defense and can keep this game close but it may have a tougher time getting things going offensively than others expect.
Other West Regional Predictions:
No. 8 Bishop Gorman fights off No. 15 Servite, 38-34.
No. 21 Folsom wins a shootout with No. 79 Cathedral Catholic, 40-31.
No. 27 Mater Dei beats a young No. 46 Corona Centennial, 30-21.
No. 19 Hoover at No. 29 Colquitt County
WHEN HOOVER HAS THE BALL:
Hoover will have to do something different than it tried in the 24-21 loss to Miami Central as the combination of conservative playcalling and inconsistent quarterback play pushed the team from the Top 10. There is a theory that the staff was holding back some plays to take on Colquitt and relied on the defense too much before the dam broke and Miami Central scored two quick touchdowns.
WHEN COLQUITT COUNTY HAS THE BALL:
This is the Rush Propst offense and as such there will be some passing. Colquitt County will need to maintain its balance to get a victory in this game and Propst knows that. The team beat Mill Creek to almost every spot last week but it will not have that luxury in this contest.
FINAL PREDICTION: Hoover 16, Colquitt Count 6
The two teams played last season to a low-scoring final where Josh Niblett outcoached Propst down the stretch. This season it will not come down to the wire. Hoover is a wounded animal after losing last week and will come out with its hair on fire. Colquitt may be a little too high after a strong start last week and will not match that early energy, falling behind.
Other South Regional Predictions:
Langston Hughes will upend injured No. 42-ranked Creekside, 30-20.
No. 82 Plant starts slow but downs Lowndes, 17-9.
No. 2 Allen vs No. 55 Denton Guyer
WHEN ALLEN HAS THE BALL:
If the header was a fill in the blank the sentence would read: When Allen has the ball (expect them to score). The Eagles return three offensive lineman of which two are major Division I prospects, two receivers with one committed to Notre Dame, and a three-year starter that happens to be the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year and Texas A&M commit. There is very little that point to this team not getting into the 30s every week, if not more, if it needs to.
WHEN DENTON GUYER HAS THE BALL:
The Wildcats will be breaking in a new quarterback after Jerrod Heard graduated but the reports from the scrimmage in Texas have been all very positive and Guyer may be able to keep pace. Allen lost 10 starters on defense and so this could be a shootout and a very entertaining game.
FINAL PREDICTION: Allen 38, Guyer 33
If the over/under was set on the prediction above the bet would be for more points to be scored than less. Each team will be lead by the offense this year and while Allen can set the pace it also could be vulnerable to have points scored against it. This will be a fun game to watch.
Other Heartland Regional Predictions:
No. 45 Trinity muscles through No. 88 Eastern Christian, 40-30.
No. 4 St. Edward vs No. 98 Gilman
WHEN ST. EDWARD HAS THE BALL:
It will be a strength versus strength battle as St. Edward returns much of its high-scoring offense while Gilman has plenty of talent on defense. Usually we favor the defense but St. Ed has played teams with a better defense than Gilman and faired well. This game will come down to the other side of the ball as the Eagles will get some point on the board.
WHEN GILMAN HAS THE BALL:
The talent is there — and usually is — but the playcalling has to adjust for this Greyhound team to make a real game of this. The St. Edward defense has some vulnerable points on the front seven and so that could help Gilman establish the run which may be the only way the passing game comes alive as the secondary for St. Ed is rather impressive. If Gilman is going to win the game it will need to either get into the high-20s or force some turnovers and keep St. Ed on the sideline.
FINAL PREDICTION: St. Edward 28, Gilman 16
St. Ed is just too good at the right positions in this game. Gilman may remain a Top 100 team if it loses — and even if it loses by the margin predicted — because this doesn’t look like a good match-up on paper. St. Ed is a clear favorite in Ohio and a showcase game on national television may make it a stronger contender for a national title.
Other Lakes Regional Predictions:
No. 18 St. Joseph’s Prep wins on the road at Mt. Carmel, 27-13.
No. 99 St. Xavier starts strong over East St. Louis, 30-22.

ACL injuries wreaking havoc as the season openshttps://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/acl-injuries-wreaking-havoc-as-the-season-opens/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/acl-injuries-wreaking-havoc-as-the-season-opens/#comments Wed, 27 Aug 2014 14:41:09 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5802 National Week Zero of the high school football season has just completed but the year is over for four standout players in the southeast.

ACL injuries have knocked out running back Taj Griffin, quarterback Jon Randall Belton, receiver Jayson Stanley, and defensive lineman Scott Patchan.

Three players were on HSFB100 teams that all must now replace a major part of their offense.

Taj Griffin will miss the rest of the McEachern season.

Taj Griffin will miss the rest of the McEachern season.

Griffin was the centerpiece of the McEachern (Powder Springs, GA) attack which began the season at No. 11 in the national rankings. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Oregon commitment is ranked No. 31 overall by 247Sports and got off to a strong start this season by scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter of the opener and rushing for 137 yards.

He was injured on a special teams play late in a 52-49 loss to North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) at the Corky Kell Classic.

His father told Michael Carvell (twitter) of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Taj is in good spirits and focused on getting ready for college.

“It’s clearly a disappointment,” Herb Griffin said. “It’s something you don’t want to ever have happen. It’s one of those things that is part of the game. Sooner or later, if you play football, something is going to happen and you’ve got to deal with it. So we’re having to deal with it. And we’ll start rehab as soon as we can.”

Meanwhile — and secondarily — the Indians dropped to No. 41 in the HSFB100 and will likely fall further, if not complete out of the rankings, if the team is not able to rebound for its Sept. 5 showdown with No. 24 Buford (GA).

Louisiana power, West Monroe (LA), will be without its quarterback for the second straight year as Jon Randall Belton was injured in a scrimmage against Parkway (Shreveport, LA) on Friday.

Belton is listed at 6-foot-3, 203-pounds and the No. 13 player at his position in the Class of 2016 by Rivals.com.

As a sophomore Belton tore his MCL, ACL, and meniscus against Ruston which forced the team to use a linebacker at quarterback from the middle of October until it fell in the second round of the players.

This year will likely push the same issue as Dustin Mitchell will reprise the role and go back under center for the Rebels.

Dr. James Andrews performed the initial surgery and declared Belton to be 100 percent and twice as strong but a late hit on the sideline in the scrimmage put an abrupt end to his season.

It was a sentiment that Belton shared with the Rivals.com TCU recruiting site, PurpleMenace.com, before the season.

“I feel like I’m even farther along than I was last year,” he said. “I’m ready to get back on that field and get hit, and then get back up on my legs and keep going.”

The loss of Belton will slide West Monroe down from the No. 28 position that it entered the week ranked.

The Rebels will open the season in national Week Two against No. 76 Madison Central (MS) after playing a jamboree game versus Neville (Monroe, LA) this weekend.

No. 42-ranked Creekside (Fairburn, GA) must replace over 1,000 yards and 16 scores after Georgia receiver pledge Jayson Stanley announced on twitter he would miss the rest of the season.

Stanley was hurt in the first quarter of his teams 55-41 victory over South Cobb (Austell, GA) after gaining 39 yards on the first two series of the game.

He is ranked No. 222 by 247Sports and as a four-star prospect who just committed to Georgia on Aug. 16.

Creekside had already dropped from No. 33 to No. 42 in the HSFB100 but now it must immediately find a replacement for Stanley as it enters a game this weekend against the No. 9 team in the Peach State — and fringe HSFB100 program — Langston Hughes (Fairburn, GA).

Patchan also announced his tear on twitter saying that he will be ready for his freshman year at Miami.

IMG began the season as the No. 23 team in Florida but had scheduled games with St. John’s (Washington, DC), St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, NJ), and Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, FL) — among others — that could have quickly increased their stock nationally.

Without the 6-foot-6, 238-pound four-star prospect it could be tough for the third-year program to make the climb into the HSFB100.

Race tightens atop Media Compilation Top 25https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/race-tightens-atop-media-compilation-top-25/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/race-tightens-atop-media-compilation-top-25/#comments Tue, 26 Aug 2014 10:00:11 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5789 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) went from unranked to the No. 2 team in the county according to the Freeman Computer model and despite not playing last week it was enough of a boost to move the the Raiders from No. 6 in the preseason rankings to No. 1 in the Media Compilation Top 25 Week Zero update.

The Raiders also added a No. 1 vote — worth 40 points — by taking the top spot in the Scout.com Top 50 which was not released when the preseason media poll was announced prior to the season.

View Past Polls:

The six major polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.

The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each Tuesday of the season.

Allen (Texas) had claimed the top spot in the preseason poll and it moved down to No. 2 this week by a narrow margin of just four points.

Of the multiple movers the most curious was Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) sliding down from No. 5 to No. 8 despite a 44-0 victory over Brophy (Phoenix, AZ). The Gaels maintained or imporoved in all polls — including staying at No. 1 by the USAToday — but as other teams gained points with the inclusion of the Scout poll, the Gaels sat outside its Top 25 and slid backwards.

Here is the complete poll:

1 (6)235St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)133112
The boost from outside the Top 25 to No. 2 in the computer rankings pushed the Raiders to the top.
2 (1)231Allen (Texas)242421
Allen maintained its position in every poll from the preseason and added a No. 2 from Scout.com.
3 (4)218St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA)328636
The Braves blew out its opposition this week and moved up in two human polls but dropped in the computer model.
4 (3)216St. Edward (Lakewood, OH)4106253
St. Edward was slid up in several polls with the Hoover loss. It has yet to play a game.
5 (2)213Cedar Hill (Texas)681765
Cedar Hill moved in different directions in every poll except MaxPreps where it remains No. 1.
6 (12)206Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL)1264549
The computer model adds major points here, too. BTW was Top 25 in every poll but unranked by the computer. Downing Oscar Smith pushed it up in most every poll.
7 (14)189Miami Central (Miami, FL)155108811
Miami Central moved up in every poll. Its greatest gain was from unranked the No. 11 by the computer.
8 (5)183Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV)51934
The Gaels maintained its placement in most polls and gained in the HSFB100 and the computer. Curiously it is not in the Scout.com Top 25.
9 (11)161De La Salle (Concord, CA)82411141018
De La Salle remained in place with the computer but news of its injured quarterback hurt its ranking with three other polls. The USAToday moved it up.
10 (7)160Katy (Texas)91513102514
Katy remained in the middle of everyone’s pack but scored enough for a Top 10 placement.
11 (8)151Hoover (Alabama)192015121613
Hoover dropped 15 in the HSFB100, 13 in the USAToday 25, 12 in the MaxPreps 25, and seven in the PrepNation 25 but rose from unranked to No. 13 in the computer rankings after losing.
12 (10)142Centreville (Clifton, VA)2277914
Centreville remained steady in most polls with little variance. A marginal slip in the computer model knocked it from No. 24 to the outside costing it the Top 10 spot from the preseason.
13 (23t)135Buford (Georgia)24222491220
Major moves by PrepNation (up 13) and the computer (unranked to No. 20) gained major points for the team that knocked off Trinity Christian.
14 (16)127St. Joseph’s (Philadelphia, PA)181819158
The Prep was moved up two spots in several poll and the cumulative effect was a two spot increase overall. The USAToday remains the lone poll waiting to see the Hawks on the field.
15 (17t)123St. Peter’s (Jersey City, NJ)179211619
St. Peter’s got similar treatment as St. Joe’s Prep. Human polls are tying the two together. The computer is the lone holdout on this program.
16 (19)103DeSoto (Texas)14171317
DeSoto remained off the ballot of the HSFB100 and the USAToday 25. It also dropped eight spots in the computer causing a slide overall.
17 (9)102Servite (Anaheim, CA)14122412
Apparently the HSFB100 missed a memo on Servite as it moved the team up two places. The Friars were dropped out of the USAToday, down two in MaxPreps, and five each at PrepNation and the computer rankings.
18 (17t)100American Heritage (Plantation, FL)10511
This is the first team missing from three polls (USAToday, Scout, Computer). It cruised to an impressive win over Dwyer on ESPN to open its season that didn’t register to half the pollsters.
19 (15)93Folsom (California)21171815
Most polls stayed the within a spot or two on Folsom expect the computer poll which dropped the Bulldogs nine places.
20 (20)82Bellevue (Washington)101615
Bellevue was almost completely unchanged except for the HSFB100 which slid the Wolverines up to take the place of Hoover and McEachern. The other polls didn’t move Washington’s best team.
21(22)77Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)16237
Mater Dei moved into the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and maintained its spot in the Media Compilation Poll with the help of Top 10-points from the computer.
22 (-)71Archbishop Wood (Warminster, PA)23722
Wood was on the fringe of several polls but gained major points with a Top 10 placement from Scout.com.

Minnesota Vikings to provide high school athletic trainershttps://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/minnesota-vikings-to-provide-high-school-athletic-trainers/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/minnesota-vikings-to-provide-high-school-athletic-trainers/#comments Mon, 25 Aug 2014 21:34:27 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5786 The Minnesota Vikings will provide athletic trainers for high school football programs in the Minneapolis and St. Paul school districts during the upcoming season.

The Vikings announced Monday they are teaming up with TRIA Orthopaedic Center to provide certified athletic trainers for nearly 600 football players in 13 Minneapolis and St. Paul high schools.

A grant from the National Football League Foundation and a matching donation from the Vikings ownership will provide $50,000 for the program.

The high school football programs will receive certified athletic training coverage from TRIA for camps, practices and competitions.

Vikings head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman says athletic trainers provide care for players that can result in lower injury rates and help in making return-to-play decisions for concussions and other injuries.

CIF announces change to Bowl selection processhttps://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/cif-announces-change-to-bowl-selection-process/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/cif-announces-change-to-bowl-selection-process/#comments Mon, 25 Aug 2014 18:26:02 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5773 The (perceived) top teams in California will go straight to the finals.

A press release from the governing body on Monday announced that the top team in the North and South will be selected to the Open Bowl game and not be placed into a Regional qualifier.

Jake Browning could top 5,000 yards passing again as a senior but not face De La Salle.

Jake Browning could top 5,000 yards passing again as a senior but not face De La Salle.

The format of selecting the top two teams for the Open Bowl had come under fire in recent years as the loser of the Regional qualifier was then left out of the state bowl experience, not having the chance to play for its designated Bowl by classification despite being viewed as one of the top two teams in its region.

While the SoCal standings will shuffle throughout the season and the PAC5 playoffs will likely determine who will represent the region it will be markedly different in the North.

A potential meeting between current HSFB100 No. 8 De La Salle (Concord, CA)and No. 21 Folsom (CA) would be one of the best games of the year — and maybe the best chance of any NorCal team to half the Spartans 250-game NorCal winning streak if the rankings hold true and both are deemed the best teams in the region.

The full release is below:

The CIF State Office today announced a return to the original format and philosophy of the CIF State Open Division Championship Bowl Game presented by Farmers. The best school from the North Region and best school from the South Region, as determined by the selection committee, will be chosen and automatically advance to the CIF State Championship Open Division Bowl Game and will have a bye during Regional Bowl Game play.

This return to the original format began with the CIF Football Advisory Committee at their April 2014 meeting and was also unanimously supported by the 10 CIF Section Commissioners at their summer 2014 meeting along with the CIF Executive Committee.

“Following two years of the expanded Open Division Football Regional Bowl Championships, the votes by both the football coaches’ advisory committee and the 10 Section Commissioners indicated the strong desire to return the Open Division Football Bowl Game to its original format,” stated Roger L. Blake, CIF Executive Director. “As with all State Championship events, each year there is always a thorough review by various committees. Modifications are forwarded when there is a majority that believes the changes will better serve our membership and their students.”

Divisions I-IV for the CIF Regional Championship Bowl Games will continue to be selected during CIF Selection Sunday by the selection committee.

This year Selection Sunday will be on Sunday, December 7, 2014. Regional Championship Bowl Games for Divisions I-IV will take place December 12-13, at various locations throughout the state and the State Championship Bowl Games for Open and Divisions I-IV will be held December 19-20, at the StubHub Center in Carson.
