Lauderdale, FL) went from unranked to the No. 2 team in the county according to the Freeman Computer model and despite not playing last week it was enough of a boost to move the the Raiders from No. 6 in the preseason rankings to No. 1 in the Media Compilation Top 25 Week Zero update.

The Raiders also added a No. 1 vote — worth 40 points — by taking the top spot in the Scout.com Top 50 which was not released when the preseason media poll was announced prior to the season.

View Past Polls:

The six major polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.

The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each Tuesday of the season.

Allen (Texas) had claimed the top spot in the preseason poll and it moved down to No. 2 this week by a narrow margin of just four points.

Of the multiple movers the most curious was Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) sliding down from No. 5 to No. 8 despite a 44-0 victory over Brophy (Phoenix, AZ). The Gaels maintained or imporoved in all polls — including staying at No. 1 by the USAToday — but as other teams gained points with the inclusion of the Scout poll, the Gaels sat outside its Top 25 and slid backwards.

Here is the complete poll:

1 (6)235St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)133112
The boost from outside the Top 25 to No. 2 in the computer rankings pushed the Raiders to the top.
2 (1)231Allen (Texas)242421
Allen maintained its position in every poll from the preseason and added a No. 2 from Scout.com.
3 (4)218St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA)328636
The Braves blew out its opposition this week and moved up in two human polls but dropped in the computer model.
4 (3)216St. Edward (Lakewood, OH)4106253
St. Edward was slid up in several polls with the Hoover loss. It has yet to play a game.
5 (2)213Cedar Hill (Texas)681765
Cedar Hill moved in different directions in every poll except MaxPreps where it remains No. 1.
6 (12)206Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL)1264549
The computer model adds major points here, too. BTW was Top 25 in every poll but unranked by the computer. Downing Oscar Smith pushed it up in most every poll.
7 (14)189Miami Central (Miami, FL)155108811
Miami Central moved up in every poll. Its greatest gain was from unranked the No. 11 by the computer.
8 (5)183Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV)51934
The Gaels maintained its placement in most polls and gained in the HSFB100 and the computer. Curiously it is not in the Scout.com Top 25.
9 (11)161De La Salle (Concord, CA)82411141018
De La Salle remained in place with the computer but news of its injured quarterback hurt its ranking with three other polls. The USAToday moved it up.
10 (7)160Katy (Texas)91513102514
Katy remained in the middle of everyone’s pack but scored enough for a Top 10 placement.
11 (8)151Hoover (Alabama)192015121613
Hoover dropped 15 in the HSFB100, 13 in the USAToday 25, 12 in the MaxPreps 25, and seven in the PrepNation 25 but rose from unranked to No. 13 in the computer rankings after losing.
12 (10)142Centreville (Clifton, VA)2277914
Centreville remained steady in most polls with little variance. A marginal slip in the computer model knocked it from No. 24 to the outside costing it the Top 10 spot from the preseason.
13 (23t)135Buford (Georgia)24222491220
Major moves by PrepNation (up 13) and the computer (unranked to No. 20) gained major points for the team that knocked off Trinity Christian.
14 (16)127St. Joseph’s (Philadelphia, PA)181819158
The Prep was moved up two spots in several poll and the cumulative effect was a two spot increase overall. The USAToday remains the lone poll waiting to see the Hawks on the field.
15 (17t)123St. Peter’s (Jersey City, NJ)179211619
St. Peter’s got similar treatment as St. Joe’s Prep. Human polls are tying the two together. The computer is the lone holdout on this program.
16 (19)103DeSoto (Texas)14171317
DeSoto remained off the ballot of the HSFB100 and the USAToday 25. It also dropped eight spots in the computer causing a slide overall.
17 (9)102Servite (Anaheim, CA)14122412
Apparently the HSFB100 missed a memo on Servite as it moved the team up two places. The Friars were dropped out of the USAToday, down two in MaxPreps, and five each at PrepNation and the computer rankings.
18 (17t)100American Heritage (Plantation, FL)10511
This is the first team missing from three polls (USAToday, Scout, Computer). It cruised to an impressive win over Dwyer on ESPN to open its season that didn’t register to half the pollsters.
19 (15)93Folsom (California)21171815
Most polls stayed the within a spot or two on Folsom expect the computer poll which dropped the Bulldogs nine places.
20 (20)82Bellevue (Washington)101615
Bellevue was almost completely unchanged except for the HSFB100 which slid the Wolverines up to take the place of Hoover and McEachern. The other polls didn’t move Washington’s best team.
21(22)77Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)16237
Mater Dei moved into the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and maintained its spot in the Media Compilation Poll with the help of Top 10-points from the computer.
22 (-)71Archbishop Wood (Warminster, PA)23722
Wood was on the fringe of several polls but gained major points with a Top 10 placement from Scout.com.
23 (21)69Warren Easton (New Orleans, LA)201321
One of the most talent rich teams is left off at MaxPreps, Scout and by the Computer as a 10-3 season in 2013 leaves questions.
24t (-)63Guyer (Denton, TX)910
Scout and the computer know something that no one else does as both placed the Wildcats in the Top 10. A battle with No. 2 Allen this week will test that theory.
24t (23t)63Jenks (Oklahoma)122325
One of the top programs in the country had bottom end placement in two polls with a strong showing in the USAToday rankings.

OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Ben Davis (59); Don Bosco (59); Bingham (57); Moeller (55); Chandler (52); Serra (52); Punahou (42); Lee’s Summit West (39); Mountain Pointe (39); Gonzaga (37); Mallad Creek (30); Rummel (27); Miramar (25); Apopka (24); Male (23); Franklin (21); Ensworth (20); Acadiana (19), and Mainland (16).

DROPPED OUT: Previous No. 13 McEachern (Powder Springs, GA) and No. 23t Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, FL).

STOPPED RECEIVING VOTES: Aledo (Texas); Armwood (Seffner, FL); Blue Springs (MO); Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, MS), and Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA).

Hoover falls from the Top 5 in HSFB100 Week Zero updatehttps://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/hoover-falls-from-the-top-5-in-national-high-school-football-poll/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/hoover-falls-from-the-top-5-in-national-high-school-football-poll/#comments Mon, 25 Aug 2014 15:18:31 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5756 Week Zero of the national high school football season is now in the books and the results created immediate change in the HSFB100.

The move making the greatest impact was the drop of Hoover (AL) from No. 4 to No. 19 as the Bucs suffered a defeat at the hands of Miami Central, 24-21.

View Past Polls:

Hoover led the game 7-6 into the fourth quarter before the Rockets broke free for two scores and a 21-7 lead. Hoover fought back to tie the game before allowing a winning drive in the final minutes.

A greater concern for Hoover is the offensive production.

After watching the game multiple times the play calling was exceedingly conservative — even for a program that keeps lesser opponents in the game with a normally conservative offensive gameplan.

There are several option for why this happened — and only the coaches know for sure — but the three most viable are as follows:

First the team was leading and playing solid, bend-don’t-break defense, and winning the game 7-6 was deemed plausible and as such it didn’t want to tip its hand for future opponents.

In that mindset, keeping everything close to the vest would be strategic as the Bucs are set to go on the road to take on No. 29 Colquitt County and even though Rush Propst has not been the coach at Hoover for seven years his shadow reaches across state lines. It could have been a reason for the team to be happy with punting and playing defense on a regular basis.

Our second option is the sporadic play at the quarterback position.

Hoover pro-style quarterback Jack Hutcheson was streaky during the game and that makes it difficult for any offense to get in the groove. He missed a pass down the seam by four yards which would have resulted in a touchdown but followed it with a well placed pass on a wheel route for a score two plays later. He missed open targets and took sacks when throwing the ball away was available to him but then made great passes in the fourth quarter to bring his team back. If the coaches didn’t know which version of Hutcheson was going to be on the field for each drive it could have impacted playcalling.

The final option is simple, Miami Central was just too good.

It was known that the front seven for Miami Central was going to be the best that the Bucs would face all year and it lived up to the billing. While it is easy to question what the Hoover offense was trying to do it may be more accurate to credit the Rockets for making it tough on them to do anything. If the players do not have the time to make the plays it could make the play calls look questionable.

With it just being the first week of the season there are still three months questions but after one week the answer to which team will win a HSFB100 National Title has eliminated one possibility with a preseason Top 5 team falling.

RK (L)TEAMCITY (ST)RECORDLAST WEEK
1 (1)St. Thomas AquinasFt. Lauderdale (FL)0-0Idle
The Raiders were idle during Week Zero but got a great look at its Week One opponent, No. 7 American Heritage.
2 (2)AllenAllen (TX)0-0Idle
Allen starts right were it left off in 2013 as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation. It will open with No. 55 Denton Guyer in Week One.
3 (3)St. John BoscoBellflower (CA)1-0def. St. Louis, 63-14
St. John Bosco took a trip to Hawaii and cruised to an easy victory. The team was not test as much as we had anticipated as St. Louis opened the season with two losses and is likely to go 0-3, which could devalue the W for St. John Bosco.
4 (5)St. EdwardLakewood (OH)0-0Idle
St. Edward has plenty of offensive firepower of its own and has one of the better defenses in the state of Ohio. The Eagles will open with No. 98 Gilman on Sunday of Week One.
5 (8)Bishop GormanLas Vegas (NV)1-0def. Brophy, 44-0.
The Gaels made it look easy in blanking Brophy this week. Gorman has a team and a schedule that could keep pushing it up the national rankings. Both sides of the ball will be tested more in a showdown with No. 14 Servite this week. .
6 (9)Cedar HillCedar Hill (TX)0-0Idle
The Longhorns have been ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation by one media outlet and as low as No. 4 in the state by another. It will open against an intriguing South Oak Cliff team in Week One. South Oak Cliff is a fringe HSFB100 team entering the year and could be a challenge.
7 (10)American HeritagePlantation (FL)0-0Idle
American Heritage showed well in a nationally televised game against Dwyer, ‘winning’ the game 49-23. It does not count in the win-loss column but it changed the ranking of both teams.
8 (6)De La SalleConcord (CA)0-0Idle
De La Salle takes a little slide but has a lot of held breath as its quarterback was injured during practice this weekend. If the team loses him — combined with the other injuries and transfers — the Spartans may slide further.
9 (7)KatyKaty (TX)0-0Idle
The Tigers lost in the state finals last year after making some uncharacteristic errors. Katy returns the majority of its defense — which was led by a group of talented sophomores and bolstered bu juniors last year — and has one of the top running backs in the country.
10 (12)BellevueBellevue (WA)0-0Idle
Bellevue will buoy in the rankings the next two weeks as it is idle again in Week One before a showdown with No. 11 Serra in Week Two.
11 (13)SerraGardena (CA)0-0Idle
Coming off of a disappointing end to 2013, the Cavaliers start near the top of the national rankings with redemption on their mind. It will open with Lakwood in Week One before playing Bellevue.
12 (14)Booker T. WashingtonMiami (FL)1-0def. Oscar Smith, 57-21
The defending HSFB100 National Champion looked like a similar product as last year in defeated one of the best in Virginia. The speed of the Tornadoes is simply impressive at every level.
13 (15)ChandlerChandler (AZ)0-0Idle
A mental block was lifted last year as the Wolves downed crosstown rivals, Hamilton. The Wolves return the most of any team in Arizona and the improving state lands a preseason Top 25 team for the second consecutive year when Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ) was listed as the team to beat and ran the table.
14 (16)ServiteAnaheim (CA)0-0Idle
Moving a team that went 6-6 last season into the Top 15 without playing a game is a pretty risky bet but one that is worth taking. The Friars will take on No. 5 Bishop Gorman to open the season in Week One.
15 (18)Miami CentralMiami (FL)1-0Ldef. No. 19 Hoover, 24-21
The Rockets adjusted in the second half and wore down Hoover to claim a victory. It was not pretty but winning ugly is better than losing. The team gained 317 rushing yards and found a few new stars to replace what it lost.
16 (17)MiramarMiramar (FL)0-0Idle
Failure is a major motivator and the Patriot senior class has to be feeling plenty of fuel after one of the most stunning upsets of the year ended its season in 2013. Talent is high and despite a coaching change, expectations are amazingly high.
17 (19)St. Peter’s PrepJersey City (NJ)0-0Idle
New Jersey has been a state that has dramatically improved its national reputation over the last decade and that helps push the Marauders into the Top 25 entering the year. It will have another week to watch before getting started in September.
18 (20)St. Joseph’s PrepPhiladelphia (PA)0-0Idle
Prep was the wire-to-wire top team in Pennsylvania but did not earn a HSFB100 ranking after a state championship season. The Hawks will open with perennial Illinois power, Mt. Carmel on Aug. 31.
19 (4)HooverHoover (AL)0-1lost to No. 15 Miami Central, 24-21
STOCK DOWN: Hoover had the lead against Miami Central but looked like it was trying to win 7-6 and not put more points on the board. Ultimately the conservative calls became its undoing. The defense was not without blame as it allowed 317 yards on the ground which we would guess hasn’t happened to the Bucs in 20-plus years.
20 (21)Warren EastonNew Orleans (LA)0-0Idle
Likely the most talented team not given a Top 10 ranking entering the season the Eagles have a lot to prove to finish in the Top 25. The team will again be idle this week and then open the year during national Week Two.
21 (22)FolsomFolsom (CA)0-0Idle
Folsom is a team that generates most discussion in the early Top 25. The Bulldogs have improved depth and schedule and will prove where they belong. It opens with No. 79 Cathedral Catholic in Week One.
22 (23)CentrevilleClifton (VA)0-0Idle
The Wing-T offense returns both of its top rushers and the majority of its offensive line. It will have another week of rest as the season doesn’t start for Centreville until September.
23 (24)BinghamSouth Jordan (UT)1-0def. Davis, 33-14
The Miners opened the year with an Endowment Game win over Davis. The biggest test for the team is coming up against Bishop Gorman in a few weeks.
24 (25)BufordBuford (GA)1-0def. No. 84 Trinity Christian, 17-0
Buford is now staked its claim to the No. 1 spot in Georiga. It will take on No. 41 McEachern in a few weeks to secure the position but the Wolves looked solid on defense against Trinity Christian.
25 (27)MainlandDaytona Beach (FL)0-0Idle
Mainland moved into the Top 25 taking the spot vacated by McEachern dropping from No. 11. The defense will be the calling card for this team in 2014.
26 (26)AcadianaLafayette (LA)0-0Idle

28 (29)West MonroeWest Monroe (LA)0-0Idle
29 (83)Colquitt CountyMoultrie (GA)1-0def. 74 Mill Creek, 31-14
STOCK UP: The Packers got off to an unusually hot start by beating then-No. 74 Mill Creek. Colquitt moves into the No. 1 spot in the highest class for Georiga but has plenty of competition. It will play No. 19 Hoover this week in what will be a very telling game for both programs.
30 (71)Dutch ForkIrmo (SC)1-0def. Greenwood, 45-19
STOCK UP: It was hard not to be impressed with the improvements made by the Dutch Fork offense in besting then-No. 85 Greenwood. The Silver Foxes are on a bye before heading to Texas for a game with No. 2 Allen.

41 (11)McEachernPowder Springs (GA)0-1lost to No. 40 North Gwinnett, 52-49
STOCK DOWN: The defense and untimely injuries held back McEachern in its Week Zero loss to North Gwinnett. This could also have been a classic case of reading too many headlines. The team will look to rebound against No. 24 Buford in two weeks.

Allen lands at No. 1 in Preseason Media Compilation Top 25https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/allen-lands-at-no-1-in-preseason-media-compilation-top-25/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/allen-lands-at-no-1-in-preseason-media-compilation-top-25/#comments Wed, 13 Aug 2014 12:11:37 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5513 An explosion in high school football coverage has made the market confusing for consumers as to the rankings of teams.

NationalHSFootball.com enters the 2014 by compiling the seven most respected polls in the industry to provide the most comprehensive Media Compilation Top 25.

View Past Polls:

The polls considered are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; StudentSports Fab50; Scout.com Top 50; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; and Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those seven polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll. Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25.

The Media Compilation Top 25 will be updated each week of the regular season.

Allen (Texas) begins the year at the No. 1 spot in the poll with a sizable lead over a Cedar Hill (Texas) program that is could have played if not for re-districting in 2014 that pushed Allen into a larger district and eliminated one out-of-district game.

Student Sports has not annonced when their initial poll will release nor has Scout and as such each poll is listed as NA, and teams awarded no points.

Here is the complete poll:

St. Thomas Aquinas tops the Preseason HSFB100https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/st-thomas-aquinas-tops-the-preseason-hsfb100/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/st-thomas-aquinas-tops-the-preseason-hsfb100/#comments Tue, 12 Aug 2014 10:30:34 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5457 It has been six seasons since the team that started the year atop the national high school football rankings has ended there.

That is the history staring St. Thomas Aquinas (Forth Lauderdale, FL) in the face. (Read more on Aquinas, here)

Not since the 2007 Miami Northwestern (Miami, FL) program went wire-to-wire has a team duplicated the effort; only two teams in that same time span would go on to win its sate title.
HSFB100
Odds are that a team inside the Top 25 will claim the title and an even more narrowed scope places the safe bets at teams No. 4 through No. 9.

In 2008, St. Thomas Aquinas won the HSFB100 after starting the year at No.8.

2010 and 2012 produced winners that moved up from the No. 5 spot when South Panola (Batesville, MS) and John Curtis (River Ridge, LA) hoisted the trophy.

Trinity (Louisville, KY) won the 2011 championshiop after starting the season at No. 9 in the poll.

2013 winner, Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) moved up from No. 4.

Only in 2009 did a team make a move from further back in the pack when Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) claimed its lone national title after staring the season No. 22.

Entering the season the power states are well represented in the HSFB100 as ‘The Big Three’ of Florida (15), Texas (14), California (11) make up 40 teams of the HSFB100.

1St. Thomas AquinasFt. LauderdaleFL10-3
The foundation was strong but the addition the team added was what pushed the team over the top. Offensively the team can roll out DI athletes like hockey lines and defensively there are no weak positions. The schedule will test the Raiders and could keep the team at No. 1.
2AllenAllenTX16-0
Allen starts right were it left off in 2013 as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation. The defense is turning over a ton of starters as well as DI prospects but it may have the best offense in the country with a quarterback that is starting his third year in the offense.
3St. John BoscoBellflowerCA16-0
St. John Bosco also remains locked into the position it ended the 2013 season as it returns in nearly the same situation as Allen. The offense for the Braves could prove to be among the nation’s elite but it will need to find replacements for 10 defensive starters. It’s schedule will be among the best in the nation come December — if the team meets expectations and makes it that deep.
4HooverHooverAL15-0
Hoover is likely only outdone by Aquinas for balance with its returning players. The Bucs defense is projected to be better than both St. John Bosco and Allen but offensively the group is not as good nearly across the board. The offense could prove doubters wrong with early games against Miami Central (Miami, FL) and Colquitt County (Moultire, GA).
5St. EdwardLakewoodOH11-2
St. Edward has plenty of offensive firepower of its own and has one of the better defenses in the state of Ohio. Combining what St. Edward returns with what many other programs in the state lost pushed the Eagles to a major headstart in the Buckeye State. The team could be primed for its second Top 5 finish in the last five years.
6De La SalleConcordCA14-1
De La Salle is the third team to coincidentally be starting its 2014 season in the same placement it ended 2013. The offense will be breaking in a new quarterback and it also lost a key member to its defensive front seven. The talent is still there for De La Salle however and it was quite close to being preseason pick in California.
7KatyKatyTX15-1
The Tigers lost in the state finals last year after making some uncharacteristic errors. Katy returns the majority of its defense — which was led by a group of talented sophomores and bolstered bu juniors last year — and has one of the top running backs in the country. The program is usually always fundamentally sound and has to be motivated to erase the loss from last year.
8Bishop GormanLas VegasNV13-2
The Gaels will own Nevada once again but it has added plenty of tests against other programs in out-of-state games. The talent is always high at Gorman and this year is no different. Offensively the team is comparable to St. Thomas Aquinas but the defense has some more question marks that will need answered.
9Cedar HillCedar HillTX14-2
The Longhorns have been ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation by one media outlet and as low as No. 4 in the state by another. Much of the talent does return from its championship season from a year ago so expectations are high. Inside the Top 10 nationally feels like the right place for Cedar Hill to prove itself one way or the other.
10American HeritagePlantationFL15-1
American Heritage won a state title but lost two five-star players from last season on offense. Like St. Thomas Aquinas it really benefited from transfers leaving University School (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and bolstered an already talented roster. The ranking for this team has varied similar to Cedar Hill and like most every team in the Top 10 the schedule will sort out preseason evaluations with in-season ability.
11McEachernPowder SpringsGA11-3
As talented and deep as any team in the rankings the Indians are the early favorite to win Georgia. The team will open with a pair of tough games and have to play all three teams that defeated it last year in the regular season. With three, five-star players on one squad the talent is there, too.
12BellevueBellevueWA14-0
Never a program to go to a knife fight without a gun, the Wolverines only lose 10 seniors from an undefeated 2013 season. It will take on two out-of-state foes and likely see another HSFB100 team in the state finals to validate its ranking.
13SerraGardenaCA13-1
Coming off of a disappointing end to 2013, the Cavaliers start near the top of the national rankings with redemption on their mind. The team has a strong defense but some questions as to depth — and toughness from some analysts — which pushed the talented team below Bellevue to open the year.
14Booker T. WashingtonMiamiFL14-0
The defending HSFB100 National Champion are losing a lot of talented players but most every report from the offseason is that it is not missing a beat. It would be impressive if that were true. Starting inside the Top 25 was not a lock in the early part of the evaluation process but a strong spring helped land the Tornadoes here.
15ChandlerChandlerAZ10-3
A mental block was lifted last year as the Wolves downed crosstown rivals, Hamilton. The Wolves return the most of any team in Arizona and the improving state lands a preseason Top 25 team for the second consecutive year when Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ) was listed as the team to beat and ran the table.
16ServiteAnaheimCA6-6
Putting a team that went 6-6 last season into the Preseason Top 25 is a pretty risky bet but one that is worth taking. The Friars have the talent to make a major move in the poll and if it didn’t play the schedule it had last year probably would have been a 10-game winner in any other state.
17MiramarMiramarFL12-1
Failure is a major motivator and the Patriot senior class has to be feeling plenty of fuel after one of the most stunning upsets of the year ended its season in 2013. Talent is high and despite a coaching change, expectations are amazingly high.
18Miami CentralMiamiFL13-1
The flipside to Allen and St. John Bosco is Miami Central. The Rockets are replacing 10 players on offense and there is a real concern that the team may struggle to score. Defensively this program looks like it could have a front seven that keeps it in every game and a secondary that can ballhawk and win a few on its own. Time will tell if this was a respect ranking or solid early evaluations.
19St. Peter’s PrepJersey CityNJ10-2
New Jersey has been a state that has dramatically improved its national reputation over the last decade and that helps push the Marauders into the Top 25 entering the year. The team brings back two of the best players in the state as well as a talented supporting cast that could have it earn a state title that has evaded it for years.
20St. Jospeh’s PrepPhiladelphiaPA13-3
Prep was the wire-to-wire top team in Pennsylvania but did not earn a HSFB100 ranking after a state championship season. The Hawks returns so much talent that it is tough to not believe the program is a runaway winner in the state. It will need to prove a national power with four out-of-state games to open the year.
21Warren EastonNew OrleansLA10-4
Likely the most talented team not given a Top 10 ranking entering the season the Eagles have a lot to prove to finish in the Top 25. There are double-digit players that will go on to play on Saturday but if they aren’t interested in showing strong on Friday nights the team will not improve like many project it to.
22FolsomFolsomCA14-1
The Bulldogs are a controversial team among fans in California and a Top 25 placement will likley irk some — mostly in SoCal. Folsom dramatically improved its schedule this season and has stepped up in depth over the last three years. There is a very high cieling with an unbeaten season.
23CentrevilleCliftonVA15-0
The Wing-T offense returns both of its top rushers and the majority of its offensive line. This was the year that many cirlced on the calendar for Centreville to make a move in Virginia but it came a season early when the team won the state title and crushed powerhouse Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) to do so.
24BinghamSouth JordanUT14-0
The Miners have been the flagbearer in Utah for a number of seasons and this year it may have its most talented of the recent run. It added a couple of transfers to bolster it ranks and it will test itself with a game against Bishop Gorman in September.
25BufordBufordGA15-0
The small school power has been a source of plenty of debate in Georgia and this year it will have a chance to prove its place on the totem pole. A defense-first team the Wolves will play Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, FL) and McEachern to open the year.

St. Thomas Aquinas starts the year at No. 1 in HSFB100https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/st-thomas-aquinas-starts-the-year-at-no-1-in-hsfb100/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/st-thomas-aquinas-starts-the-year-at-no-1-in-hsfb100/#comments Tue, 12 Aug 2014 10:00:10 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5495 It was the one thing that Rocco Casullo asked not to have happen but with the talent returning at St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) it was the one thing that couldn’t be avoided.

The Raiders will enter the 2014 football season as the No. 1 team in the country.

“Don’t rank us there,” Casullo said. “Not too many teams do well with it and we don’t need it.”

Can Casullo point the Raiders in the right direction?

Can Casullo point the Raiders in the right direction?

History tends to be on the side of the coach.

Only once in the last seven years has the team that started atop the HSFB rankings finished there when Miami Northwestern (Miami, FL) went wire-to-wire in 2007.

Since then the top team has been a series of missteps:

  • In 2008, Trinity (Euless, Texas) held the No. 1 spot until late December when it fell to Allen (Texas) in the playoffs and finished the year ranked No. 10.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas started 2009 in the pole position after claiming the 2008 National Championship and held the spot until the first weekend in December when it lost to Manatee (Bradenton, FL) and finished No. 24 in the rankings.
  • Plant (Tampa, FL) had the shortest stay as the No. 1 team in 2010 when the Panthers did not make it to the first regular season game atop the poll. The team was bullied in a kickoff classic game against Manatee and moved to No. 78 before the first game was played. Plant remained in the rankings until December when it lost its third game of the year and ended the season unranked.
  • In 2011 a loaded Prattville (AL) started the season at No. 1 but it only lasted one week. The Lions fell to St. Thomas Aquinas in a Top 10 showdown to open the season, 34-31. Prattville would go on to win its state title and finish the year No. 14.
  • Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) was the victim of an injury costing it a real chance to hold its placement. The team was No. 1 in 2012 but suffered an injury to star quarterback Johnny Stanton during the Sept. 17 weekend. Santa Margarita was immediately dropped to No. 35 in the rankings and lasted only a few more weeks as it would lose multiple games without the quarterback and ended the season unranked.
  • Miami Central (Miami, FL) was knocked from its perch early in 2013 as it fell in a No. 1 versus No. 2 game with Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) on Sept. 16. The Rockets would close out the season with a state title and the No. 4 placement in the final rankings.

Casullo said that his team needs to prove themselves as the best team in its county before concerning itself with being the best team in the entire country.

“I don’t know if we will be No. 1 in Broward come October so I can’t worry about what happens outside of those borders,” he said. “With American Heritage (Plantation, FL) having what they do it will be tough and Miramar (FL) has the most talent of any school in the area. They are loaded. Loaded.

“If we can come out of September and our opening stretch of games then we can talk about No. 1 rankings in the state but until then I have to get the kids to buy in to what we are doing and what he have to get done to be successful.”

The Raiders open with No. 10 American Heritage Aug. 29 at Sun Life Stadium to open the season for the top two teams in the state rankings.

After a bye the team will travel to New York to take on the 2009 HSFB100 National Champions, Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) at Michie Stadium on the West Point campus. Don Bosco enters the season ranked No. 41 in the HSFB100.

St. Thomas Aquinas then plays a Miramar team that is ranked No. 17 in the preseason poll and has defeated the Raiders each of the last three seasons.

“It isn’t going to be easy,” Casullo said. “All of those games will test us in September and then we will have to stay focused in October just to get to November when the playoffs start.

“In Florida you know we will see some more teams that are as good as any in the country to win a championship.”

Being in the mix for a National Title is nothing new for the staff at St. Thomas Aquinas as many have rings from the 2008 season, others were there as the program looked to repeat in 2009, and still more came aboard prior to the Raiders finishing No. 2 in 2010.

The pressure will be new for the senior class as it has been a combined 33-8 over the last three years and has been ranked No. 67, 26, and 48, respectively, in that time.

On paper this could be one of the best teams put on the field.

The offensive line returns four starters — including a pair of Syracuse commits in Colin Byrne and Samuel Clausman.

Four-star running back and Miami commitment Jordan Scarlett transferred from University School (Ft. Lauderdale) to add to three-star Maryland commit, Deltron Sands, and junior Devontae Henry-Cole in the backfield.

Class of 2016 receiver Sam Bruce — also committed to Miami — also came over from University School to join four-star Devante Peete as well as Florida Atlantic pledge Jawaun Harris as a trio of talented playmakers.

Defensively the program has a strong front seven with Nick Bosa, Duke pledge Brandon Boyce, Julian McCleod, Chris Hart, and Boston College-bound Wyatt Ray all returning.

The secondary features South Carolina commitment Damon Arnett, Tyson Cisrow as well as transfer Rashard Causey.

Junior DE Nick Bosa will lead the defensive charge. He is ranked No. 3 at his position by 247Sports. View his profile.

Jake Rizzo is going to take the first snaps at quarterback and Casullo said he will remind many Raider fans of its 2008 starter.

“When people see Jake they immediately go to compare him to Ryan Becker,” the coach said. “They are the same height, they are both really smart and under recruited, neither wants to run but both can move the ball with their legs.

“With all of the playmakers around him all we need to do is make sure Jake is comfortable and let those guys do all the work.”

If the Raiders are able to complete an unblemished season it could prove the team as the best in the country.

It is a task that FloridaHSFootball.com publisher Josh Wilson thinks the Raiders are up to.

“It is not at all surprising that St. Thomas Aquinas is the top overall team in the preseason,” he said. “The Raiders have a lot of talent and don’t be surprised if we are talking possible national champions come mid-December.”

Casullo said that the national rankings are great to discuss but the final placement is out of his hands.

“That stuff is for you to decide but I think this is a group that has that it-factor,” Casullo said. “We have tremendous talent and if we can stay healthy and stay tight then it can work.

“Our schedule will test us and a lot of things can happen but we are looking forward to it.”

HSFB100: Spanish Fort at the midpoint of Nos. 26-50https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/spanish-fort-looking-to-prove-it-belongs-among-national-elite/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/spanish-fort-looking-to-prove-it-belongs-among-national-elite/#comments Mon, 11 Aug 2014 10:29:21 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5455 Sandwiched between a list of usual suspects from power states, past HSFB100 National Champions, and Top 10 finishers is a Spanish Fort (AL) team that is looking to prove it belongs in the range of Nos. 26-50 in the national preseason rankings.

The Toros come in at No. 39 and as one of four teams from Alabama to make the HSFB100. Within the third grouping to be released Spanish Fort sticks out among six programs from Florida, four from California as well as Texas, and three from Louisiana. It looks the part of prior Top 25 programs like Bentonville (AR), Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ), and Maryville (TN) as well as 2009 HSFB100 National Champions, Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ).

Will the Spanish Fort defense be up to the test?

Will the Spanish Fort defense be up to the test?

Spanish Fort made its first appearance in the HSFB100 last season following its undefeated, state championship season. The team has won three of the last four titles in Class 5A but it will move up to Class 6A this season after Alabama broke off some of its higher enrollment schools in creating a Class 7A.

Head coach Mark Freeman said that this team is ready for taking on the toughest classification in the state.

“We have a lot of key pieces coming back and that should help us,” he said. “We are really young in the secondary and we will have to see what those kids can do but otherwise we are excited.

“I think that the new Class 6A will be the most competitive in the state and we are ready for it. When you break it down, all of the teams that have given Hoover (AL) their best games are still in Class 6A and some really good teams moved up. If you win this one, I’d say, you’d have earned it.”

Spanish Fort brings back one of the better quarterbacks in the state with Class of 2016 passer Tyler Johnson returning.

He also has a trio of playmakers alongside.

LaDarrell Pettway, Kristian Cotton, and Kevin Marion will work in at receiver.

“Tyler is a natural leader,” Freeman said. “He is a quiet kid but he speaks with his actions and he is a winner. There is no question he is going to set the tone for us.

“He is going to get some help this year from those other guys, too. We are really banking on Kevin Marion to do some big things for us.”

Defensively the group will work from the middle to the edges. Its two linebackers may represent the best duo in the state — outside of Hoover.

Class of 2016 inside backer Tre Threat already has offers from Clemson, Louisville, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State. Class of 2017 inside linebacker Thomas Johnston already boasts offers from Clemson and N.C. State with Iowa showing heavy interest.

HSFB100
“They look good,” Freeman said. “We ask them to play hard, to be prepared, and to stay in shape and we have gotten it all from them.

“This stuff is all really exciting but once the whistle blows it is anyone’s game and in our region and in our classification it doesn’t take much for things to go sideways.”

Spanish Fort will have to play Saraland (AL), Blount (Eight Mile), and Daphne (AL). It also has an improving Robertsdale (AL) and Davidson (Mobile) team that could push the Toros for four quarters.

Once the playoffs start nearly two-thirds of the Top 15 for the state will be in Class 6A.

Battling against HSFB100 programs Clay-Chalkville (Pinson) or Shades Valley (Birmingham) may not even happen if the team can not clear Opelika (AL), Florence (AL), Carver (Montgomery), Minor (Adamsville) or Daphne if the two are to meet in the second round of the playoffs.

“It will be a battle,” Freeman said. “More than I think the playoffs have been in the past. This was a really interesting year for re-classification and Class 6A took the brunt of it.

“We will have to be ready to go every week if we want to prove we belong and prove we are champions.”

HSFB100: Ohio teams bookend at Nos. 51-75https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/moeller-and-mentor-added-to-national-hsfb100-poll/ https://nationalhsfootball.com/2014/08/moeller-and-mentor-added-to-national-hsfb100-poll/#comments Fri, 08 Aug 2014 10:27:33 +0000 https://nationalhsfootball.com/?p=5453 Two of the four teams from Ohio to make the Preseason HSFB100 are the bookends for the second group to be released.

Ranked at No. 51 is Moeller (Cincinnati) and at No. 75 is Cleveland-area power, Mentor. The pair are ahead of Wayne (Huber Heights), which was ranked No. 96, but both are behind St. Edward (Lakewood) which has not had its placement revealed to-date.

Matt Crable was named a senior captain for Moeller. Follow the Crusaders on Twitter.

This grouping has just 13 states representing 25 programs as Ohio, California, Maryland, and South Carolina each have two teams included while Florida has three, Louisiana gains four, and Texas boasts five as the countdown works towards the Top 25.

Both Moeller and Mentor are breaking in new quarterbacks after the two met in the state finals, combined to go 27-3, and earn the No. 12 and No. 14 rankings, respectively, in the season-ending HSFB100.

Senior Matt Crable will step in to replace Gus Ragland at Moeller. Crable started started one game against St. Xavier (Cincinnati) and saw time against Covington Catholic (Park Hills, KY) and St. Michael’s College (Toronto, Ontario) while Ragland played his way to a scholarship at Miami of Ohio.

Moeller coach John Rodenberg said that going from Gus to Matt would cause minimal impact. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback will be tested immediately against Pickerington North (Pickerington) on Aug. 29.

The coach told Cincinnati.com that one position change was the least of his concerns.

“The attitude is great,” Rodenberg said. “The big thing is just keeping the players hungry and keeping the players focused. And I think we did that. We have a new defense and what we did on offense – philosophically we are the same – but we changed signals, words, numbers – we changed everything.”

Mentor will turn to transfer quarterback Jake Floriea.

Floreia came to the Cardinals from Lake Catholic (Mentor) and will follow in the footsteps of Mitch Trubisky and Conner Krizancic.

Trubisky won the 2012 Mr. Football award in Ohio and is battling for time at North Carolina. Krizancic signed a National Letter of Intent with Minnesota and is likely going to move to the receiver position.

Floreia told Bill Landis (follow on Twitter) that he was settling in with his new teammates.
HSFB100
His coach told Cleveland.com that he expects the level of play to remain high.

“Jake is pretty good,” Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said. “He runs well, he’s run well all summer. He’s got a nice arm to him. He’s going to be a very, very good quarterback.”

His development will also be put to the test early as Mentor will play St. Ignatius (Cleveland) in the second game of the season, on Sept. 6.

In what will likely be an interesting shuffling of teams within Ohio this season, the fortunes of both programs will fall on the arms of the new quarterbacks.

“I’m in a nice spot right now,” Floreia told Landis.

“I’m starting to build a relationship with just about everyone on the team. It’s really nice just being relaxed and being able to play.”
