HSFB100: St. Edward stumbles, falls from No. 1

Well, that didn’t last long.

The reign of St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) as the top team in the HSFB100 ended after a single contest as the Eagles fell in its first test on the road against Elder (Cincinnati, OH), 21-14.

View Past Polls:

A fast start to the game for St. Edward made most think that a repeat of the previous four meetings was in order as the Eagles marched the field and scored a touchdown for an early lead.

In each of the last four seasons St. Edward had defeated Elder by an average score of 35-12.

Elder rose to the occasion and claimed victory as it controlled the ball, and despite making more mistakes it also made more stops and knocked the Eagles from the perch.

In what may be viewed as a controversial decision St. Edward was given the benefit of the doubt and left as the top team in Ohio. The Eagles slid to the No. 19 spot in the HSFB100 and evaluated as the second-best one-loss team in the country behind Miami Central (FL) — which is ranked No. 16.

The rest of the HSFB100 saw an 11-team turnover and several big moves inside the Top 25.

The most notable was the buying back of Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) as the Gaels moved back into the Top 10 at No. 8 — up from No. 21 — after making an official switch at quarterback to sophomore Tate Martell. Martell lead the team back to victory against Centennial (Corona, CA) last week and he shined again against Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) setting up a Top 10 showdown versus St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) this coming week.

The rest of the moves are blow in the completed HSFB100:

RK (L) TEAM CITY (ST) RECORD LAST WEEK
1 (2) Don Bosco Ramsey (NJ) 2-0 Idle
Don Bosco was idle but moved up to No. 1 with the loss of St. Edward. The pool of teams contending for the top spot is shrinking each week and the Ironmen are certainly in the mix to hoist the national title trophy. It still has one game with a HSFB100 team on the schedule and could add two more in the playoffs.
2 (3) De La Salle Concord (CA) 4-0 def. Del Oro, 52-0
The Spartans are scoring at a surprisingly high rate for this proud program. It has a contest with HSFB100-ranked Servite (Anahaim, CA) this week and then enters a run of games that are expected victories. Its end of season strength of schedule may not be enough to knock off Don Bosco.
3 (4) St. John Bosco Bellflower (CA) 3-0 Idle
The Braves were idle this week and also got the one-spot bump like many of the top teams gained. It has four games with HSFB100 teams remaining on the schedule and is likely to add three, maybe four, more if it ends its season unblemished.
4 (5) Allen (Texas) 4-0 def. Plano, 42-3
Allen was “held” below 50 points for the first time this season as it worked on this rushing attack and mid-range passing in its district opener. Kyler Murray understands this offense so well that there is unlikely to be a team keep a game close until at least the third round of the playoffs.
5 (6) St. Peter’s Prep Jersey City (NJ) 3-0 def. Seton Hall Prep, 48-10
If there were to be a quarterback draft this season Brandon Wimbush may only be selected after Kyler Murry (Allen) and Josh Rosen (St. John Bosco). So long as he stays healthy this is a team that is lurking as a threat for a HSFB100 National Title.
6 (8) Mater Dei Santa Ana (CA) 3-0 def. Upland, 28-14
Mater Dei continued with a strong start beating an Upland team that some had high hopes for this year. The team has showed quite well on both sides of the ball but would still enter a game as an underdog against two teams from its own state despite being ranked No. 6 in the country. California is positioned incredibly well this year.
7 (9) Manvel (Texas) 3-0 def. Dobie, 35-10
This win was checking the box for Manvel. As much as we like the Mavericks this season it feels like No. 7 is too high right now. The upward move was made more because of what happened around it then anything Manvel did.
8 (21) Bishop Gorman Las Vegas (NV) 5-0 def. Santa Margarita, 41-10
STOCK UP:The Gaels were harshly knocked down — from No. 7 to No. 21 — following a magical escape against Centennial (Corona, CA) a week after barely beating Bingham (South Jordan, UT) and now it is back on the rise. A move at quarterback was the spark this team needed and we are much more of a believer of the Gaels with Martell than we were with Hong and with that comes a move back to the Top 10.
9 (10) Booker T. Washington Miami (FL) 5-0 def. Jackson, 55-7
The Tornadoes likely will not be tested for the rest of the regular season and probably most of the playoffs. That said, it still impressed in trouncing a quality Jackson team this week.
10 (13) DeSoto (Texas) 4-0 def. No. 63 Steele, 29-24
DeSoto welcomed back defensive tackle Bryce English this week and he came up big in the win over Steele. Both sides of the ball remain unfinished products which could prove to be a great thing as this team is far from peaking.
11 (14) Mainland Daytona Beach (FL) 4-0 def. Pine Ridge, 63-0
Through four games the Buccaneers have outscored its opponents 199-9. The teams it has bettered may not be top notch competition but it still speaks volumes when looking at the final scores. We are buyers on this team as the best in Class 6A and may prove as the best in Florida.
12 (7) Bellevue (Washington) 3-0 def. Mercer Island, 42-21
The Wolverines are now in Washington play and so Bellevue will be a buoy the rest of the year. There is no question that the team is good but there are too many top teams that can earn higher rankings this season.
13 (12) Folsom (California) 4-0 def. Burbank, 61-13
Folsom actually gained some strength of schedule points as Cathedral Catholic knocked off Helix in San Diego. This may be one of the best offenses in the country and its defense will be tested in its new league this year.
14 (15) Gonzaga Washington (DC) 3-0 def. McKinley Prep, 51-0
Gonzaga has a down Good Counsel to close September next week although it doesn’t quite feel like any team in the WCAC is going to stop the Eagles this year.
15 (16) Colquitt County Moultrie (GA) 5-0 def. Pelham, 47-7
The Packers look like the most complete team in Georgia this year. It is idle next week after cruising to a win over Pelham. It was actually good to see this team take care of buisness entering its bye week because it has stubbed its toe in the past while losing focus.
16 (20) Miami Central (Florida) 4-1 def. Columbus, 42-14
The Rockets offense is coming to life and it is moving up the HSFB100 because of it. The rest of the regular season doesn’t offer much in the way of great competition but this is a team that operates on swagger and gaining confidence will help it later in December.
17 (19) Mountain Pointe Phoenix (AZ) 5-0 def. No. 20 Chandler, 45-42
Mountain Pointe rushed for over 500 yards in defeating Chandler and showed that it has the best offensive line in the state. Its defense left a lot to be desired and it cost The Pride a spot in the Top 15.
18 (23) Warren Easton New Orleans (LA) 3-0 def. Carver, 55-6
Warren Easton has taken a firm hold of the top spot in Louisiana despite not seeing its better competition yet. This is a team similar to many in South Florida and it is building its confidence against teams that it should dominate. It didn’t dominate these same teams last year and that shows tangible improvement.
19 (1) St. Edward Lakewood (OH) 3-1 lost to No. 66 Elder, 21-14
STOCK DOWN: There are any number of reasons why St. Edward lost to Elder and all are immaterial as the final score is what counts. It was a heated debate to leave this team No. 1 in Ohio but it still has the feel of being the best team despite its loss. The schedule in front of St. Edward will determine if this leap of faith was made blindly or with good foresight.
20 (18) Chandler (Arizona) 3-1 lost to Mountain Pointe, 45-42
Chandler was unable to win the showdown game against Mountain Pointe. It also wasn’t able to stop the run. It will be a great game if the two meet again in the playoffs.
21 (22) Bingham South Jordan (UT) 4-1 def. Granger, 56-0
Bingham has moved into buoy mode while it goes through its Utah schedule. It will face a couple tests but nothing like its game with Bishop Gorman.
22 (24) Buford (Georgia) 4-0 def. White County, 42-10
Buford was back in action this week and showed its teeth in shutting down White County. The Wolves will have to wait until the playoffs to be tested again and there will be weeks were practices may be tougher than Friday nights.
23 (27) Dallas Skyline (Texas) 3-0 Idle
Skyline moved up despite being idle mostly due to the lackluster performances of teams around it. Its district is not the most challenging but its playoff path may be among the most difficult.
24 (11) St. Thomas Aquinas Ft. Lauderdale (FL) 2-1 def. No. 56 Miramar, 20-12
STOCK DOWN: How the Raiders went from looking like world beaters to being completely lost the last two weeks is an utter mystery. The Raiders tried out a new quarterback this week and had three other players suspended and so just beating Miramar was a good thing but the talent and the performances are just not adding up.
25 (28) Cedar Hill (Texas) 3-1 def. Coppell, 61-34
Cedar Hill looked like it was headed for a second straight loss before it found itself and routed Coppell. The team has the talent to be inside the Top 15 but is has lacked desire since the season started, perhaps it has regained its competitive fire and will charge towards a second straight state title.
26 (31) Flanagan Pembroke Pines (FL) 4-0 def. Cypress Bay, 33-10
27 (26) Servite Anaheim (CA) 3-1 def. Edison, 42-21
28 (43) Centennial Corona (CA) 2-2 def. No. 44 Poly, 42-34
29 (42) Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) 3-0 def. St. Frances Academy, 38-6
30 (40) Moeller Cincinnati (OH) 4-0 def. Louisville St. X, 26-0
31 (25) American Heritage Plantation (FL) 2-1 def. Chaminade-Madonna, 35-8
32 (32) Blackman Murfreesboro (TN) 5-0 def. Stewarts Creek, 49-14
33 (33) Oakland Murfreesboro (TN) 4-1 def. Smyrna, 35-14
34 (75) Rummel Metarie (LA) 3-0 def. Acadiana, 34-9
STOCK UP: It is time to take Rummel much more seriously. The team survived a fight with Hahnville to open the year and crushed Acadiana this week.
35 (46) Camden County Kingsland (GA) 5-0 def. Wayne County, 24-7
36 (36) Alemany Mission Hills (CA) 4-0 def. Dorsey, 45-15
37 (37) Punahou Honolulu (HI) 3-0 Idle
38 (45) Clay-Chalkville Pinson (AL) 5-0 def. Pison Valley, 45-35
39 (NR) Dorman Roebuck (SC) 5-0 def. No. 40 Dutch Fork, 48-37
STOCK UP: Dorman was the No. 5 team in South Carolina and had a ‘show us’ game versus Dutch Fork. The passing game was better than advertised and the defense made enough stops.
40 (17) Dutch Fork Irmo (SC) 2-2 lost to No. 39 Dorman, 48-37
41 (50) Byrnes Duncan (SC) 3-1 def. Gaffney, 29-7
42 (44) Cy-Fair Cypress (TX) 3-0 def. CySprings, 56-20
43 (47) First Coast Jacksonville (FL) 3-0 Idle
44 (29) Long Beach Poly (California) 3-1 lost to No. 28 Centennial, 42-34
45 (38) Southlake Carroll (Texas) 3-0 Idle
46 (39) Union Tulsa (OK) 2-1 def. Broken Arrow, 24-10
47 (41) Centreville Clifton (VA) 2-1 def. Hayfield, 42-18
48 (99) Starkville (Mississippi) 4-0 def. Florence, 37-7
STOCK UP: A major move made this week by Starkville as it takes over the top spot in Mississipi. The passing game was on point against Florence and as good as South Panola was in its victory Starkville was more impressive.
49 (66) Hoover (Alabama) 3-2 def. Thompson, 56-6
50 (56) Destrehan (Louisiana) 3-0 def. Dutchtown, 20-10
51 (NR) Hahnville Boutte (LA) 3-1 def. No. 60 Landry Walker, 45-39
52 (67) Shades Valley Birmingham (AL) 5-0 def. Woodlawn, 49-13
53 (68) Armwood Seffner (FL) 4-0 def. Robinson, 28-6
54 (49) Midway Waco (TX) 4-0 def. Duncanville, 35-14
55 (55) Lake Travis Austin (TX) 2-1 Idle
56 (30) Miramar (Florida) 1-2 lost to No. 24 St. Thomas Aquinas, 20-12
STOCK DOWN: There are real issues with the Patriots offense that are not limited to playing quality oppoonents. Including its inexplicable loss in the playoffs last season the team is 1-3 in its last four.
57 (54) Guyer Denton (TX) 2-1 Idle
58 (55) Euless Trinity (Texas) 4-0 def. North Shore, 29-21
59 (58) The Woodlands (Texas) 3-1 def. LaPorte, 49-3
60 (76) Landry Walker New Orleans (LA) 2-1 lost to No. 51 Hahnville, 45-39 (3 OTs)
61 (64) Katy (Texas) 3-1 def. Mayde Creek, 63-6
62 (62) Oceanside (California) 4-0 def. San Pasqual, 42-23
63 (77) Steele Cibolo (TX) 3-1 lost to No. 10 DeSoto, 29-24
64 (78) Archbishop Wood Warminster (PA) 4-0 def. West Catholic, 42-12
65 (65) Mentor (Ohio) 4-0 def. Twinsburg, 54-7
66 (NR) Elder Cincinnati (OH) 3-1 def. No. 20 St. Edward, 21-14

94 (70) Spanish Fort (Alabama) 5-0 def. Saraland, 28-13
STOCK DOWN: Spanish Fort fell from No. 35 to No. 70 with its play on the field. The rankings fell again as it may be without its quarterback for an extended period of time. The Toros are a totally different team without him.
